The Oath of Love (Chinese Drama, Viki)
As an aspiring cellist in her junior year of college, our heroine’s relatively worry free life comes to a screeching halt when her father suddenly receives a cancer diagnosis. Butting heads at first with our hero who is a doctor involved in treating her father, our heroine soon changes her opinion and is convinced our hero would be the best surgeon for her father. However, despite his skills and passion for helping his patients, our hero hides a secret trauma that makes it difficult for him to enter the operation room.
This one took a long time to air so it came with a lot of pent-up expectations. While I was a tad bit disappointed that the story was not exactly refreshing but I was glad to see at least the show’s vibe was more upbeat than I expected with good character development. Overall, I am liking the chemistry between the leads and the story enough to keep it on my watch list.
The Blue Whisper (Chinese Drama)
Despite her status as a talented and powerful demon master (one who tames demons), our heroine dreams of one day being free from the control and torture of her master. Seeing a chance at freedom when a merman was brought in to be tamed, our heroine confidently volunteered herself for the task. Never in our heroine’s wildest imagination would it occur to her that one day she would choose to sacrifice her own freedom to send the merman back to his ocean.
Understandably distrustful and angry after doing a good deed caused him to end up being tortured and locked up against his will. Our hero, a merman is an innocent by nature, and was no match to our heroine’s bright charming smiles and words. However, our hero’s heart is destined to be shattered when our heroine betrays him in the cruelest way possible, leaving him determined to seek revenge against the woman who is etched into his heart.
Obviously a tear-jerker but no worry, this one really should have a happy ending. The show is separated into parts one and two (30 episodes each I think) with the assumption that part one probably ends with our heroine “betraying” our hero while part two is our two leads patching things up and working towards their happy ever after.
With Dilraba Dilmurat and Ren Jia Lun as the leads, I went into this one with a fairly high expectation for a visual feast…and I was not disappointed. Both Dilraba Dilmurat and Ren Jia Lun look awesome in this show. I am especially loving Dilraba Dilmurat’s spunky smart heroine. As for Ren Jia Lun…I will admit that I love Ren Jia Lun’s cool aloof roles but I think I could get used to this innocent gentle hero as well…well, at least until I get the cool aloof hero back in part two.

I put OoL on hold. I started to FFW that much that hardly 5 minutes were left. I think I will put that as background video for a sewing session. I really dislike the cinematography. Is the director a beginner? The script is just a combination of all clichee plots thrown together. Even the rather mediocre original story is stellar against that. For me the show lives from the interaction of the characters only. Compared to YZ who fell into her character after a few episodes XZ still is too woodenly for me still. His character is over 30 and works as surgeon since years. Where is the self-confidence and presence in his body language? Well, maybe I’m too demanding but isn’t it an actors job to impersonate a role? At least the CP isn’t dubbed, that is a big plus.
I really loved The Oath Of Love. I am really digging the chemistry between the leads and I love that the story is not too sweet, just realistic enough. I haven’t seen any other works of the actors but I think I am a fan of them now, especially Xiao Zhan! Not to be a simp but he is so charismatic and is a really good actor (I am not even going to mention how handsome he is). I wish he did more romance dramas😩
