Why Women Love (Chinese Drama, Viki)
This one is a noona romance where our heroine is a top tech executive who has no time nor interest in romance…until she declared publically that she will get herself a boyfriend in an effort to promote her company’s new dating app. Forced by his mother to work as our heroine’s assistant in an effort to prepare him to inherit the company eventually, our hero tries to convince his new boss that his only plan for the future is to become a professional motorcycle racer but it was to no avail. Amazed by our heroine’s inability to find herself a boyfriend, our hero decides to help his boss to obtain a happy ending with her long-time crush only to belatedly realize that he might have already fallen in love with her.
I was a bit worried at first since the actor playing the male lead looked fairly young compared to the female lead but fortunately, once the show gets going, our two leads’ cute chemistry soothed my fears. It also helped that while the hero’s character is a bit rebellious but he is also a character that is inherently very gentle and thoughtful (the heart-melting sort) so that does add quite a bit of maturity to the character. One of the very first scenes I really liked was when the hero was talking all tough to get his new boss riled up but when our heroine goes to smack the table in her anger, our hero promptly catches her hand so she wouldn’t hurt herself. It was a tiny moment but it really gave us an immediate insight into our hero’s personality and set the stage for our two leads’ relationship.
Anyhow, the story itself is a fairly standard fare for a noona romance but I am liking it so far.
Shining For One Thing
Exciting news for those who watched Shining For One Thing AND were left wanting for more! While the fans have been clamoring for season two or at least just one more extra episode, the production surprised everyone by coming out with a movie announcement! The movie will have the same director and writer as the show but there was no formal announcement on the cast list. I am assuming, as most of the fans are as well, that most if not all of the cast from the show will be in the movie. It will defeat the purpose of putting out a movie…and anger the fans if the movie was not able to recast at the very least, our two main leads. Anyhow, I am pretty stoked by the news. I didn’t think a second season would be likely since the success of Shing For One Thing would most likely open a lot of doors for the cast so scheduling everyone might be difficult. However, just a single extra episode seemed a bit lonesome so a movie is the next best choice!
Here is the concept poster the production released for the movie. The tagline reads: This time, I will bravely run to you. (Another translation that is closer to the Chinese meaning instead of bravely would be unwaveringly). The next line reads: Movie Version Start
The next big five Chinese characters nestled in between Shining For One Thing is just the show’s name in Chinese.
Dine With Love (Chinese Drama, Youtube)
Saddled with a boss who firmly believes in being extremely efficient in everything he does, our heroine, a small fry in her office is suddenly promoted to become the PR director without warning. As a girl who simply wants to get off work on time so she can cook and share her food with those she loves, our heroine’s attitude on life is in great contrast to our hero’s. While our heroine tries her best to solve the many difficult tasks her boss throws at her with her sometimes unconventional methods, our hero begins to realize that his own heart is softening in the most unlikely manner.
Hmm…that synopsis sounded a bit boring but I actually found the show to be quite charming and cute. The male lead IS your typical aloof handsome CEO but the show injects just enough charming boyishness mixed with surprising heart-melting gentleness into this character to make him feel refreshing. I also like that while our heroine is a damsel who has fallen on hard times but she is a girl that knows very clearly what’s important in life and unconsciously influences those around her with her wisdom.
Royal Feast (Chinese Drama)
After Story of Yanxi Palace, actress Wu Jin Yan and actor Xu Kai are teaming up once again…and will hopefully be able to have a happy ending this time around!
Wu Jin Yan plays a talented palace cooking maid with a mysterious past. Falling in love with our heroine, our hero, the crown prince, is stunned to discover that our heroine is hiding a tragic past that is directly related to him.
I am fairly torn on this one. The romance between the two leads is very addicting…but the show has a couple of things that really bugs me. First, the pacing is uneven. Sometimes the pacing feels quite slow but then it flies at the most frustrating places (ie. the romance between the two leads). Second, there are some big plot holes in the story that really requires one to look the other way as the viewer. Still, I am really loving the romance between our two leads that I am willing to look past the flaws and keep watching.
Legally Romance (Chinese Drama, Youtube)
As one who has always envisioned herself to be well on her way to becoming a partner in some prominent law firm by the age of 24, our heroine is instead stuck working as a prelegal assistant for her college nemesis. Elated when she abruptly found herself transported back in time to her college freshman days, our heroine vows that she will use this opportunity triumphant over her nemesis once and for all. However, our heroine’s plan gets sidelined when she slowly realizes her past with our hero (her nemesis) is not all that she had assumed it to be.
This one is super cute and the secondary story is decent as well. I would totally recommend this one if you are in the mood for something fun and light.
