Forever and Ever (Chinese Drama, Youtube & iQIY)

I waited to start this one until I finished One and Only. Let me tell you, I totally sobbed through the last couple episodes of One and Only. The only solace to my super red and puffy eyes was the fact I knew our two leads would be able to have their happy ending in Forever and Ever.

One and Only’s storyline was pretty much what I expected even though the novel it was based on really gave very few details of our two lead’s previous life which meant the show had to make most of the plot up. Still, at the core, One and Only was a tragic love story between a hero who sacrificed his all for his country and a heroine who loved him for who he is including who he can’t be for her.

The thing I really didn’t know what to expect was Forever and Ever. Like I had mentioned before, the novel really had a Godfather vibe so lots of backstabbing that came with a high body count that really waylaid the great love story of our two leads that spanned two lifetimes. While I didn’t think the drama was going to go the Godfather route but I really wasn’t sure how the story would be changed.

After checking out the first ten episodes, it does look like the drama has gotten rid most of the Godfather storylines and replaced it was super cute scenes of our bumbling hero trying to romance our heroine. I have to admit that without watching One and Only, I probably would’ve found Forever and Ever a bit slow and our bumbling hero sort of…ordinary (I mean as ordinary as Allen Ren can look). But after sobbing my eyes with One and Only, I am just exceeding glad to see our two leads living a somewhat normal life without emperors, wars, and tragic deaths that I probably would be happy with scenes of them just watching tv together. The novel really didn’t have much comedic vibe to it so I was also really glad that the drama had managed to inject quite a bit of comedy into Forever and Ever, I especially love the hero’s uncle/driver.

Jun Jin Ling (Chinese Drama, Youtube)

After her father, the emperor died, our heroine discovered the shocking truth that her uncle was the one who killed her father. Thrown into the dungeon after a failed attempt at assassinating her uncle, our heroine is rescued by her master. Assming a new identity, our heroine uses her superb medical skills to start a new life and find a way to seek revenge for her father. Our hero is our heroine’s childhood friend who will become her staunchest supporter.

If you like strong female leads then this one should be a good bet. I was a bit hesitant at first since the show’s synopsis seems to hint at the fact that the heroine will end up in romantic entaglmenets with at least four male leads. However, once I started watching the show my fear was somewhat allivated since the show makes it fairly obvious who the hero is.

My Bargain Queen (Chinese Drama, Youtube)

So talented in the art of bargaining that she even started her own business helping people to negotiate the best price for what they want, our heroine finds herself in a rather awakard position when her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend (the one who ditched her three years ago on their engagement party) comes to her for help in booking a wedding venue. Thanks to this rather embarrassing new job, our heroine ended up crossing paths with our hero who is the CEO of the said wedding venue.

I am four episodes in on this one and I am liking the subtle sizzling chemistry between our two leads. The story is nothing to write home about but it’s definitely an easy watch thus far.

GO Into Your Heart (Chinese Drama, Viki & Youtube)

After seeing actor Niu Jun Feng in various supporting roles (the most memorable one for me being Love O2O), it’s nice to see him finally playing the male lead. Niu Jun Feng plays our male lead who is a famous professional player in the traditional Chinese game of Weiqi (aka Go… hence the name). Due to childhood trauma, the world in our hero’s eyes is only in black and white…that is until our heroine stumbled into our hero’s world and became the only color in his life.

I liked this one except I did make the mistake of watching the trailer…you know the kind you walk away feeling like you have just watched the whole show so the story felt a tad bit predictable to me. The heroine’s character is pretty fun and the two leads look good together even if I think the show tries a little too hard to create the “sizzling” feel. One other thing I liked about the show is how it made the Weiqi game more exciting to watch on screen by “dramatizing” it as fantasy fights when our hero is in game competitions.

My Dear Brothers (Chinese Drama, Viki)

Trusting his master’s words that his mission in life is to protect the world, our hero, the strongest immortal in all the lands, is stunned when he loses a duel against the infamous Demon Lord. Quite puzzled by the Demon Lord’s talk of how his strength come from his love for something called a “little sister”, our hero, who has never set eyes on a woman, was stunned once again when a woman who very much fits the Demon Lord’s description of a “sister” suddenly shows up in front of him.

Desperately searching for her brother who disappeared a year ago, our heroine abruptly finds herself transported from the modern world into our hero’s pond. Completely at a loss of how she ended up in a world that should only exist in fictional novels, our heroine is even more confused when she finds out that she shares the same name as the Demond Lord’s mysterious little sister the whole land has heard so much about.

This one is a fluff drama that obviously doesn’t take itself very seriously but I found it quite entertaining anyway. I especially loved the whole misunderstanding our hero had over what a “little sister” is and am excited to see what comical obstacles it will bring to our two leads once they start to fall in love.

Cute Programmer (Chinese Drama, Youtube)

Despite being a newly graduated programmer with an impressive resume, our heroine knows that she has little chance of getting her idol to hire her since he has an unspoken rule of not hiring female programmers. Determined to work for our hero no matter what, our heroine disguises herself as a man and successfully convinces our hero to hire her.

This one combines the much-beloved gender-bender trope with the equally popular contract relationship trope. I guess the idea is why stick with one TV trope when you can have two? I am actually quite partial to a good gender bender drama and I am happy to report that at least on the gender bender storyline, Cute Programmer has lived up to my expectation. I am only two episodes in so I can’t vouch for how well the show will do on the contract relationship storyline but I am liking it enough to follow it for now.

Your Sensibility My Destiny (Chinese Drama, iQIYI)

Quite proud of herself for successfully breaking out of jail, our heroine, who is quite skilled at lying and cheating is dismayed to discover that she had mistaken someone’s carriage as her runaway vehicle. Equally surprised by the unexpected guest who dived into his carriage, our hero, a prince who can’t feel any emotions and physical senses is stunned to realize that his senses are suddenly opened when he touches our heroine. Not about to let his key to a whole new world escape, our hero resolutely kidnaps our heroine.

The storyline is as predictable as it sounds but I was pleasantly surprised by how amusing I found the show to be. The two leads do a fine job in the show but I was especially impressed with the hero’s maid who is simply hilarious with her very expressive face.
