Love with Flaws (Korean Drama)

Thanks to the difficulties she has suffered for having three handsome brothers, our heroine firmly believes that all handsome men are to be avoided while “ordinary” looking men have kind hearts. In the extreme opposite…partly due to a traumatic experience he had suffered because of our heroine back when they were young, our handsome hero is obsessive about his good looks. Like water that has been dropped into a pan of boiling oil, both of our leads’ lives…and hearts are turned upsidedown when they meet again.

I am torn about this one. The premise is funny, the story is funny, the character setup is great…but I just didn’t find myself laughing even when my brain says “Oh, that should be funny.” Perhaps I was in the wrong mood when I checked this one out because like I pointed out, everything should have been hilarious. One problem that made the whole premise unbelievable to me is that while all the male leads (our hero and the heroine’s three brothers) are what I would consider good looking, but I really don’t see them as so good looking to cause the kind of reactions the drama portrayed. To make the matter worse, our heroine played by Oh Yeon Seo looks beautiful when she is supposedly the ugly duckling. Oh, well. Someone check this one out and tell me if I was just missing my funny bone when I watched it and I will go back to try again.

Sword Dynasty (Chinese Drama)

Set in a world where empires are created and destroyed by swords, there is one legendary swordsman whose name is still whispered is fear and reverence even if it has been years since he was killed due to the betrayal of those closest to him. When a rumor that the legendary swordsman’s only disciple has appeared, the already simmering tension between different ruling factions threatens to boil over.

A seemingly ordinary young man destined to live the rest of his life among the common folks due to a health condition that prevents him from becoming a great swordsman, no one could’ve guessed that our hero has made it his life’s goal to kill one of the greatest swordsman in the land- the emperor.

I am really liking Sword Dynasty! The vibe and cinematography of Sword Dynasty kinda reminds me a bit of Ever Night except this one has even more fighting sequence. After watching Go Go Squid! which is super modern I wasn’t sure if I could get used to actor Li Xian in more traditional ancient Chinese outfits. I will admit that it took me about an episode and a half but it did happen eventually especially since Li Xian’s character in Sword Dynasty is quite different from his previous one. The hero in Go Go Squid! is fairly stoic and serious but our hero here is cheeky and quick-witted.

We are Young (Chinese Drama)

A story about a group of young adults between the age of 18-24 as they try to blaze their own path while juggling friendship, love and family.

I am not feeling this one. The first episode introduced too many characters and the two leads’ first meeting was very predictable conflict-ridden yet without the necessary charm to keep me interested. I do feel terrible that I couldn’t give a better review on this one since I was actually quite excited to see actor Huang Ming playing the lead role here instead of his usual male second lead.

Without Knowing Dawn Break in the East (Chinese Drama)

Growing up like siblings after both of their parents passed away together in a car accident, our heroine is fiercely loyal when our hero, a respected law professor is suddenly thrown in jail for murder. A top lawyer herself, our heroine is ready to take on the whole world to prove our hero’s innocence.

Judging by the first episode and the synopsis, this one is fairly heavy on criminal cases our leads will work on. Not to mention our hero is also on a mission to find out the real truth behind his father’s death. No fear though, there should be plenty of romance not only between our two leads but for our secondary characters too.

A Little Thing Called First Love (Chinese Drama, Finished)

I finished watching this one over the weekend. I liked the fact the show really took me back to what it felt like to have a crush on someone. It was also nice that it was a mutual crush almost from the beginning and it wasn’t our heroine’s “beauty transformation” that caused our hero to start liking her.

Now, the show did get a bit draggy with its tendency to replay past “memory” scenes…but it wasn’t nearly as bad as some of the other C-dramas I have seen. So minor annoyance but not terrible. I would probably give this one a 7/10, check it out if you are in the mood for a light innocent first crushes sort of love story. Available on Viki and Netflix

ps. I really liked the show’s ending OST. It made me think of the heartaches and excitements that come with crushes.
