Episode 3

This is what I would call the “Indecent Proposal” episode but the result is completely different from the movie. While our hero was the one who first suggested that Wei Wei could spend a night with him in exchange of him slashing his house price dramatically (if my calculation is right, he offered to slashed what would be the equivalent of $266,000 US off the selling price.), it seems pretty obvious that he said it knowing there is no way Wei Wei would agree.

Surprisingly, after a talk with her boyfriend’s father and realizing how important it is to her boyfriend to own a home, Wei Wei calls Kehuan out to tell him that she accepts his offer. I personally thought our heroine’s decision here is quite out of character for her. The show had taken a lot of pain to set up our heroine as someone who is fairly conservative and wants to earn her own way in life so I really don’t see why she would “sacrifice” herself this way. Now, I guess there could be the very real possibility that unconsciously Wei Wei wants to allow herself a night with a man she is attracted to…

I did love the little rant Kehuan gave when Wei Wei told him that she is spending the night to sacrifice herself for her boyfriend. Granted, the poor guy’s speech was really all the things his girlfriend hasn’t allowed him to say but it applied perfectly to our heroine as well. Oh, one more clue we got from Kehuant’s words is that he most likely really loved his girlfriend at one point but his girlfriend’s controlling and creepy personality has wiped away any love that once existed.

By the way, a side note on the Viki translation of this scene. Viki’s translation of Kehuan’s words when he demanded to know where 321 (the boyfriend) is, and Wei Wei retorted “What is that to do with you?!”, Kehuan had yelled back “Because I would not have let you get soaked.” The correct translation of what Kehuan said is actually “Because if it was me I would not have let a single drop of rain fall on you!” Swoon…

Episode 4

Well, I think the first 10 minutes of this episode finally convinced me that our hero truly had good intention of letting go of Wei Wei and stop trying to derail her life plan. After all, up to this point in the story, while 321 might have plenty of flaws but none that should stop Wei Wei from having a modest predicable happy life with him. Later in this episode, a big warning flag will pop up when Wei Wei’s best friend confronts 321 about his job and the guy’s obvious reluctance to quit seems to hint that he might put his own interest/life plan ahead of Wei Wei.

An interesting side note. I was telling Mama Ninja about this show’s plot and when I got to describing Wei Wei’s boyfriend and his retire at 65 plan, Mama Ninja’s first reaction was that the guy is too weak. Surprised, since I personally thought 321’s frugal approach was rather commendable (perhaps not to THAT point and I am pretty confused why retiring at 65 is a goal…isn’t that most people’s planned retirement age anyway?) I asked Mama Ninja why she said that. The answer Mama Ninja gave was that if a man is going to dream then he should dream big and aspire to something great instead of an insipid dream of asking his girlfriend to save every dime with him so they could hope to retire when they are old. In Mama Ninja’s words, that’s not a dream that’s a 100% safe no risk plan to live like everyone else. I have since given Mama Ninja’s answer quite a bit of thought and while I still think there is nothing wrong with living a frugal life to meet one’s goal I do agree that if 321 was going to dream then he should at least be daring enough to dream big. After all, you know what they say. Shoot for the moon. If you fail, at least you’ll land among the stars. 321’s current plan? Shoot for Earth and some big tall charming guy will show up to tell your girlfriend that he’ll show her the universe…

Episode 4 is also where we get real evidence that our heroine has really lost her heart to our hero. Wei Wei should’ve been happy that Kehuan seems sincerely willing to let her go but instead, she couldn’t help herself and made it harder for our hero to walk away from her. (From chasing after Kehuan at the convenient store to choosing to put on the dress that would obviously provoke our hero.) The kiss in the kitchen or perhaps how tempted she was by Kehuan’s offer to take her away that very moment, seemed to finally shock Wei Wei into the reality of how out of control her heart is and that’s why she not only agreed to 321’s proposal but asks him to marry her quickly.

Other than the kiss between our leads, this scene is my favorite in this episode! Up to this point in the episode, I was busy feeling bad for our hero who is about to sell off his house at a steep loss so the girl he likes could ride off into the sunset with a guy he really doesn’t think deserves her…then our hero flashes his trademark naughty smile as he tells our heroine the reason he is selling the house to her because it has their memories in it. Ahh!!! He is letting her go…but he is going to make sure she lives her “blissful life” in a house that will constantly remind her of him?! So naughty…but I love it!
