Chapter 31-40

  • Like in the drama, instead of a face-off with her mother-in-law, our heroine paid Madam Wei a visit and was quite pleased when Madam Wei promptly took the matter over.
  • Still savoring the look of shock on our heroine that morning when he told her to break the bad news regarding his refusal of Chu Yu to his mom, our hero returned home later that day, intrigued to see how his little wife fared after a certain confrontation with his mother. Before Wei Shao could ask our heroine about the matter, he was called away by his mother, who complained about how his wife had gone to his grandmother on the concubine matter. Wei Shao offered an alternative solution of having Chu Yu marry one of his men, thus allowing her to stay by Mama Wei’s side. Realizing there is no changing of Wei Shao’s mind, Mama Wei and Chu Yu came up with an alternative plan.
  • Returning back to his room after the not so pleasant meeting with his mother, Wei Shao seemed extra friendly as he had dinner with Xiao Qiao and urged her to eat more…and more…and more. When Xiao Qiao protests that she couldn’t possibly eat anymore, Wei Shao insists that she should eat more since they wouldn’t want his grandmother to worry. Realizing this was Wei Shao’s method of punishing her, Xiao Qiao immediately apologized and fessed up about going to his grandmother in order to avoid dealing with her mother-in-law. Just when it looked Wei Shao might keep on teasing her, Xiao Qiao was saved when our hero was abruptly called away by a military emergency. (A small group Xiongnu soldiers was causing chaos. The man who had met with Wei Yan (hero’s cousin) was also caught but Wei Yan saved him and let him go.)
  • Five days later, Wei Shao finally returned home after taking care of the chaos caused by the Xiongu soldiers. Just when our hero was about to sit down for a meal, he was once again called away by his mother. Wei Shao was greeted at his mother’s place by a full table of food. Looking at the immense amount of food, Wei Shao was reminded of how he had forced Xiao Qiao to eat just five days ago.
  • What followed was pretty close to what the drama portrayed. After making sure her son had drunk three cups of the special wine she had prepared for him, Mama Wei got her maid to lead Wei Shao to a room where Chu Yu was. The one difference was that once Wei Shao figured out what was happening, he was furious, so after he kicked open the door and found that Mama Wei’s trusted servant dared to stop him from leaving, Wei Shao kicked her away. The force of that kick was so big that it sent the woman flying through the air and broke her leg.
  • En route back to his room, Wei Shao tried to throw up what he could but whatever his mother gave him was still surging through his body. Shocked and confused when she saw Wei Shao head straight for the bath the moment he walked through the door, Xiao Qiao obediently asked the servants to bring buckets and buckets of ice when Wei Shao asked for them. Belatedly piecing together Wei Shao’s abnormal condition and his visit to Mama Wei’s place, the first thought our heroine had was to run away, but she ended up staying against her judgment when Wei Shao asked for water.
  • The heat burning in Wei Shao’s body eventually overcame his self-control, and he got up (completely naked…) from the tub and grabbed Xiao Qiao from the back (she was on her way to get more water for him). Finally feeling like the sensation of being near death easing as he pressed himself against Xiao Qiao, Wei Shao quickly took all her clothes off and was about to finish the deed when a sharp pain came from his shoulder. Crying in fear and pain, Xiao Qiao had no way to fight back other than biting him on the shoulder. (Different from the drama, our heroine’s grandfather was dead before our two leads got married so there was no need, thus no promise from our hero that our heroine could keep a mourning period.)
  • Wei Shao stopped abruptly and rolled himself to the side of the bed. Freed, Xiao Qiao grabbed her clothes, jumped up, and tried to run off after throwing some clothes on herself, but was stopped when Wei Shao asked “Where are you going?” Looking at Xiao Qiao’s guarded expression, Wei Shao admitted dejectedly, “I accidentally ingested aphrodisiac at my mother’s place.” Wei Shao continued as Xiao Qiao stared at him in stunned silence, “As you can see, I thought I could handle it but…” He stopped, and his gaze fell on Xiao Qiao again. Xiao Qiao grabbed her lapel and stammered without thinking, “Who do you want me to call for you? I will call for you right away! If one is not enough, then two!” Seeing Wei Shao’s gaze was still on her, Xiao Qiao quickly said, “Or wait! Bear with it for a bit! Once I finish getting dressed, I will go get grandmother to get you a doctor…”
  • Xiao Qiao turned to run off but was promptly grabbed by Wei Shao and taken back to bed. Tears started to roll down Xiao Qiao’s face again as she imagined what pain must await her, especially in our hero’s abnormal state. Wei Shao suddenly grabbed Xiao Qiao’s hand and whispered, “I feel terrible, help me.” Trusting Wei Shao’s promise that as long as she helped him, then he would not do anything else to her, our poor heroine’s hand…lost its innocence after a very long night.
  • The next morning, by the time Xiao Qiao woke up, Wei Shao had already left. Xiao Qiao’s maid noted that while Wei Shao looked tired but his mood seemed rather sunny.
  • Wei Shao didn’t forget his mother though, and confronted her the next morning. Wei Shao exacted two promises from his mother 1. To send Chu Yu away within three days. 2. To never have any dealings with the sorcery temple.
  • Xiao Qiao was summoned by Madam Wei to inquire about what happened that caused Wei Shao to kick down the doors at his mother’s place. Xiao Qiao claimed no knowledge of the matter but described truthfully Wei Shao’s strange mannerism and demand for an ice bath when he came back. Promptly figuring out what Mama Wei did to her grandson, a fuming Madam Wei headed straight for her foolish daughter-in-law’s place. Not moved by Mama Wei’s pleading, Madam Wei ordered the servants to toss Chu Yu out that very moment.
  • That night, Wei Shao returned to his room acting as if nothing had happened, even if his mind kept replaying memories of the night before. Strangely annoyed when Xiao Qiao also appeared as if she had no recollection of the night before, Wei Shao became a bit flustered when Xiao Qiao confessed what she had told his grandmother. Embarrassed that his grandmother found out the truth but unable to fault Xiao Qiao because she technically didn’t say anything his grandmother couldn’t find out easily elsewhere, Wei Shao finally let the issue go when he whispered “You told my grandmother that you helped me?” and got a “Of course not” back from an equally flustered Xiao Qiao.
  • The next two weeks passed without much incident until our hero came home to find out that his grandmother had “loan” out his wife to write for a famous scholar. (That’s the famous poet in the show) Going personally to pick Xiao Qiao up, our hero was not pleased when he found the place surrounded by eager students waiting for a glimpse of his beautiful wife. Further annoyed once he met the scholar who was obviously very taken by Xiao Qiao, Wei Shao’s kept his expression normal as he allowed Xiao Qiao to believe that he only came personally because his grandmother had sent him.
  • That night, as Wei Shao lay by Xiao Qiao who was fast asleep, the two weeks of constantly thinking of that fateful night finally caused our hero to come up with the feeble excuse that his grandmother would be displeased if she found out that he had not consummated the marriage.
  • Exhausted from writing on a stone wall all day, Xiao Qiao was dreaming that her nanny was massaging her until she suddenly woke up to the realization of what was about to happen. Our heroine didn’t actually have an issue with consummating the marriage, what she did have a problem with though was the fact that our hero seemed to be fairly clueless and had no idea how to be gentle at all. In the chaos of things, and not one to tolerate pain, our heroine ended up kicking Wei Shao in the face. Feeling a bit guilty, Xiao Qiao asked Wei Shao to slow down in a trembling voice. Before our hero could react, our two leads were interrupted by an urgent military intelligence.

Chapter 41-50

  • The urgent military intelligence was the news that Yanzhou, our heroine’s home, was about to be under attack. Wei Shao’s men were split into two camps. One camp thought they should send help to show everyone else that they are a trustworthy ally. The other camp thought they should just stand by and take Yanzhou for themselves after Qiao Clan had been finished off.
  • Our hero was pretty conflicted, especially since his own troops were facing an oncoming attack elsewhere…not to mention his hatred for the Qiao Clan. Finding out about her clan’s plight, Xiao Qiao first went to Madam Wei to inquire about Wei Shao’s decision. Her heart sank when Madam Wei told her the danger Wei Shao’s own side was facing, Xiao Qiao decided to confront our hero directly.
  • This crisis made our heroine realize that one, be it a person, a clan, or a nation, has to be strong on their own or else you would always be at someone else’s mercy. Xiao Qiao knew she would need to help Qiao Clan to stand on its own…but they will need Wei Shao’s help to survive this crisis first.
  • Wei Shao was not surprised when Xiao Qiao showed up in front of him to request help for Yanzhou’s sake. However, he was surprised when Xiao Qiao frankly admitted that she knew well that Wei Shao would not forget his hatred towards Qiao clan just because of a woman. Xiao Qiao instead asked Wei Shao to consider how saving Yanzhou would help his own cause. Knowing well the danger Wei Shao’s own troops were facing, Xiao Qiao offered up a solution where they could pull in another ruling clan to go save Yanzhou. (The other clan would have reason thanks to the money Qiao clan would offer up, including our heroine’s offering of her own dowry and a chance to get on Wei Shao’s good side.)
  • While our hero’s expression remained aloof as Xiao Qiao talked, inwardly, Wei Shao was utterly shocked. What Xiao Qiao suggested was exactly what he had planned on doing…but was just having a hard time with the fact that he would be saving the Qiao clan. By this point, our hero was finally starting to admit to himself that he found Xiao Qiao very attractive physically…but he was now hit with the realization that there was also a stunning intelligence behind that beautiful face.
  • Unable to read his expression, our heroine leaned forward, placed a kiss on his lips, and said, “If husband saves Yanzhou, Manman (her nickname) would be very grateful.” After swallowing hard, Wei Shao watched as Xiao Qiao walked away and told her, “Keep your dowry and make yourself a new outfit or two.”
  • Our hero didn’t need our heroine’s dowry because he came up with a brilliant plan of robbing the bride, grain, and money Clan A was sending to Clan B (the one attacking Yanzhou). Clan A had hope to form a marriage alliance with Clan B, but Wei Shao would take everything and promised to give them all to Clan C if Clan C would go attack Clan B, thus forcing Clan B to give up attacking Yanzhou and return home to defend their own city.
  • Xiao Qiao returned home to find the Wei manor in full preparation for our hero’s departure the next morning for the battlefield. All three women stayed up waiting for Wei Shao to return home after making all the necessary arrangements. After visiting his grandmother and mother, Wei Shao returned to his room to find Xiao Qiao also waiting up for him. Refusing Xiao Qiao offer of food, Wei Shao picked her up and took her straight to bed…finally! Perhaps due to inexperience and being a tad bit too excited, the whole thing didn’t last very long. Seeing Wei Shao’s consternation with his own performance, Xiao Qiao very unwisely let a giggle escape her lips and promptly brought about our hero’s valiant attempt to prove himself again…that is until his mother’s maid showed up to report that his mother is suffering from a headache and would like to see him.
  • The scene turned to Yanzhou where our heroine’s father and younger brother were in the middle of a battle that was not going well for them at all. (Of note, our heroine’s younger brother was impressively able to kill the Clan B’s ruler’s son- the son that Clan A was going to marry off the ruler’s daughter to.) The fight got so bad that our heroine’s younger brother was about to be killed, but he was saved at the last moment by a man who had exceptional command over the horses, super strength, and one of his eyes was green. Bi Zhi not only saved our heroine’s brother but also held off the enemies for our heroine’s father until the enemy army got word of their city being attacked and had to give up on what should’ve been an impending win.
  • While our hero was still away on the battlefield, Madam Wei decided to take Xiao Qiao and visit an old friend who was at death’s door. While on this visit, Xiao Qiao finally met the famous Madam Yulou. In the book, Madam Yulou wasn’t engaged to our hero’s brother but was almost engaged to Wei Shao himself. The two were childhood friends, and seeing how well they got along, the two families had intended to marry them until the Wei Clan suffered that great loss. By the time our heroine met Madam Yulou, she was already a widow. The meeting was brief but it did cause our heroine to be quite curious about Madam Yulou’s relationship with our hero.
  • Away on the battlefield, Wei Shao had a decisive win and captured Chen Rui- the guy who had kidnapped our heroine at the beginning of the novel and ended up escaping. Knowing well that death was probably imminent for him, Chen Rui started to say anything and everything to try to anger Wei Shao, mostly centered around Xiao Qiao. Despite knowing Chen Rui was lying…especially since he had firsthand proof just a little bit ago that Xiao Qiao was not touched by Chen Rui, Wei Shao was nonetheless furious enough to make sure that Chen Rui died a very painful death.
  • Xiao Qiao found out from Madam Wei that Wei Shao was victorious on the battlefield. This was a very important battle since this won Wei Shao the land that was the most productive in terms of grain. Plenty of grain meant plenty of food to feed the troops, and with more troops meant more ability to defend and conquer.
  • From Qiao Man’s memory of her cousin’s past life, Xiao Qiao knew her cousin had killed herself, and Madam Yulou, who had been the only other woman by Wei Shao’s side, would become the empress. Xiao Qiao wondered now that history had been changed with herself being Wei Shao’s wife instead of her cousin, would Madam Yulou still be the empress in the end? Xiao Qiao really wanted to know if the Wei Shao in that lifetime, while he was surveying his new empire with his empress by his side, if he ever thought of the wife who was buried in the abandoned field?
  • The novel paused for a bit to let the reader know what really happened in the previous lifetime.
  • Wei Shao was only thirty years old when he became an emperor. The new emperor only had two women. The first was his wife of 10 years, our heroine’s cousin. The second was Madam Yulou, the concubine he seemed to have favored for many years. Interestingly, at this point, Wei Shao didn’t make Madam Yulou his empress yet but had instead given her the highest royal consort title he could give.
  • Thoroughly offended that she was not made the empress, Madam Yulou visited Qiao Fan (cousin) the day after Wei Shao left for yet another battlefield. Qiao Fan was only 25-26 years of age, but was sick, frail, and thin like an old woman. All the maids knew she was not liked by her husband, so they refused to even get her a cup of water. Madam Yulou gloated in front of Qiao Fan how much Wei Shao cared for her and demanded to know why Qiao Fan hadn’t killed herself yet. Qiao Fan herself was not sure why she was still alive if not for holding out that last hope of seeing Bi Zhi one last time. Interestingly, from Madam Yulou’s words and attitude, we learned that she seemed to have really disliked our hero’s grandmother.
  • Wei Shao’s battle was not going well. What should’ve been a quick battle of three months hit a snag when a new general came out of nowhere- a general with a rare green eye. Hitting a stalemate on the battlefield, Wei Shao had no choice but to call off the offensive and return to his court. Mildly surprised when he was informed that Qiao Fan had killed herself the day after he left for the battlefield, Wei Shao was displeased upon learning that Madam Yulou had made the decision to bury Qiao Fan away from his family burial plot. Not to say he himself would have chosen to let Qiao Fan be bury in his future grave, but still, he was somewhat offended that Madam Yulou would make such a decision regarding the wife his grandmother had chosen for him. It felt like an offense to himself and his long-deceased grandmother.
  • That night, seeing that Wei Shao was angry with her, Madam Yulou tearfully pleaded for forgiveness. Instead of being moved by her tears, Wei Shao somehow felt even more irritated. Wei Shao ended the night by telling Madam Yulou that he would grant her wish by making her the empress but he had also just accepted nine women that have been given to him by various influences.
  • Eight years later, Wei Shao had successfully united all the factions. Just when Wei Shao was ready to eagerly set off to conquer more land to add to his growing borders, his arch nemesis, the green-eyed general, resurfaced again. Furious that the guy was still alive, Wei Shao set off right away to take him down…only to die during the fight from an arrow that came out of nowhere from the sky. Wei Shao was 39 years old. The 8 years young empire promptly broke apart after Wei Shao’s death, and the land was once again embroiled in constant warfare. The people were once again suffering greatly, as they were 10 years ago. End of the previous lifetime’s storyline.
  • Wei Shao finally came home victorious and was very eager to resume where he had left off with Xiao Qiao before he left. Apparently remembering how his mother had interrupted him repeatedly, Wei Shao even remembered to order the servants not to disturb him and Xiao Qiao for anyone, unless it was his grandmother who needed him.
  • Hilariously, Wei Shao didn’t last any longer this time around, but our heroine learned from her previous mistake and did not laugh at all. Unfortunately for Xiao Qiao, her not laughing didn’t save her in the end, since Wei Shao was annoyed enough with himself that he insisted on proving himself multiple times that night.

Chapter 51-60

  • Grateful for the help Wei Shao gave them in saving Yanzhou, Qiao clan decided to send an envoy to Wei Clan to express their gratitude. Missing his sister terribly, Qiao Ci promptly volunteered to lead the envoy team to Wei Clan.
  • Qiao Ci’s reception at the Wei manor was pretty good under the circumstances. Madam Wei was graceful in welcoming Qiao Ci. Even Mama Wei was civil enough out of fear of her mother-in-law, despite her strong dislike for anyone from the Qiao clan. Wei Shao was away on business when Qiao Ci arrived. Xiao Qiao knew Wei Shao well enough to figure he probably didn’t do it on purpose but she could still tell that his attitude towards her brother was one of indifference. Our heroine knew that despite their growing and very frequent intimacy in the privacy of their bedroom, it was foolish to think that Wei Zhi would feel any less hatred towards Qiao clan because of her…still, she couldn’t help but feel just a little down. Wei Shao’s attitude made our heroine feel like she might just be a plaything that he could be nice to when he is still interested in her but who knows what will happen once he loses interest.
  • Qiao Ci told Xiao Qiao about being saved by their former horse slave- Bi Zhi. Qiao Ci wasn’t told much about what happened with his cousin, so he was stunned when Xiao Qiao admitted to him that not only did their cousin elope willingly with Bi Zhi but she was the one who helped them to do so. Xiao Qiao admonished Qiao Ci that Bi Zhi might very well be the lifeline the Qiao Clan will have to rely on in the future.
  • Wei Shao came home from his trip to find his brother-in-law already fast best buddies with his cousin Wei Yan. To be fair, our hero didn’t go on a trip purposefully to avoid welcoming his brother-in-law, but he also would rather if our heroine had no further contact with anyone from the Qiao clan…even if he was fully aware that would be impossible. While away on his trip, our hero couldn’t help but keep remembering the disappointment in his wife’s eyes. The thought of disappointing her bothered our hero, so much so that when he went back to his room and found a scantily dressed woman on his bed that he angrily hacked the bed post down, sending the woman running away screaming.
  • Xiao Qiao came home from being out to find Wei Shao already waiting for her in their room. Our hero tells Xiao Qiao that he held a welcoming dinner for her brother and complained that Qiao Ci seemed to dislike him. Speechless, Xiao Qiao explains that Qiao Ci was probably just heeding her admonishment to be respectful to him. Despite being away for two nights, Wei Shao missed Xiao Qiao terribly and showed it that night with his actions and words, showing her a more playful side of him. The topic of Gao Heng (the scholar) came up, and Wei Shao insisted that he too was quite a promising painter in his days and went to his study to get his old paintings to show Xiao Qiao as proof. Curious when Wei Shao didn’t come back for quite a while, Xiao Qiao went looking for him and found him staring at his cherished box.
  • Wei Shao confronts Xiao Qiao about the marks on his box that looked like someone had tried to pry it open. Xiao Qiao confessed that while she did take it out which she apologized for doing so and promised to never do it again but insisted that she did not try to pry it open. Wei Shao stormed out in anger, leaving Xiao Qiao stunned in the room. Much to our hero’s credit, he actually calmed down very quickly after he left Xiao Qiao and figured out that there was a big chance that someone was trying to sow discord between them and his own mother was the most likely suspect.
  • Like in the drama, Wei Shao explained to his mother that he had gifted the box to Xiao Qiao and taught her how to open it, thus his wife can’t possibly be the one who tried to pry open the box. Telling his mother that he is greatly concerned that someone around them was trying to frame Xiao Qiao, Wei Shao tasked his mother with the responsibility of finding the person and punishing them.
  • Confirming his suspicion based on his mother’s reaction, Wei Sha returned to his room later that night to find Xiao Qiao waiting for him with THE box in front of her. Wei Shao had walked in feeling guilty that he must have scared Xiao Qiao with his reaction, but seeing the box he had strictly told Xiao Qiao to not touch once again in front of her filled Wei Shao with displeasure.
  • Our hero was completely dumbfounded when his wife proceeded to unlock what should’ve been a very complicated lock to open. Xiao Qiao didn’t open the box but simply told Wei Shao that while she did make the mistake of touching the box, but she refuses to be blamed for something she didn’t do. Once again forced to acknowledge that his wife is truly no ordinary lady, Wei Shao’s plan of chastising Xiao Qiao and then comforting her that he had proved her innocence all went down the drain. His wife didn’t need him to prove her innocence, she had already done it herself.
  • Wei Yan (cousin) took our heroine’s brother to the brothel for some drinks. When Xiao Qiao found out, she personally went to the brothel and brought him back. Wei Shao walked in from being away for three days to find Xiao Qiao lecturing her brother. Feeling that Qiao Ci was probably old enough to be trained to handle circumstances like that, Wei Shao interrupted Xiao Qiao and sent Qiao Ci away. Wei Shao had hoped that being away for three days would give Xiao Qiao time to stop being angry with him, but thanks to the whole brothel matter, things seemed to have worsened between them. Later that night, Wei Shao came home to find Xiao Qiao even more distant. Feeling hurt, Wei Shao left their room only to find out from Xiao Qiao’s nanny that Xiao Qiao is hurting quite a bit because her period had come. To make matters worse, Mama Wei had complained of some ailment again and Xiao Qiao had to go make sure she was okay despite feeling very poorly. Hearing the nanny’s words, Wei Shao promptly went back into his bedroom, pulled Xiao Qiao in his arms, and rubbed her tummy to help her feel better. Whispering by Xiao Qiao’s ear, Wei Shao told “In the future, you need to let me know if you are not feeling well. If you don’t tell me, how would I know?”
  • Wei Yan is falling in love with Xiao Qiao more and more, especially after seeing her flash of anger when he took her brother to the brothel. In a drunken spell, Wei Yan drew Xiao Qiao’s image on the wall. When the painting was finished, Wei Yan told all his servants that no one was allowed into his study from that point on or they would be killed.

Chapter 60 on to the ending summaries:

  • Like in the drama, Wei Yan’s concubine Lan Yun was the one who told on him regarding his feelings for our heroine. Unlike the drama though, while Lan Yun was in love with Wei Yan, she was actually a spy sent from Wei Yan’s father and the purpose of her betraying Wei Yan was to force him to leave the Wei Clan out of shame. Wei Yan never did really forgive Lan Yun for exposing him (at least by the end of the book) but Lan Yun was still very much in love with him and declared her intention to wait for him even as he was riding away at the end of the novel.
  • Increasingly nervous when the time fast approaches to the same time frame where Madam Wei would get sick and die in the previous lifetime, our heroine tried to convince our hero to stick around in case sometime really does happen to his grandmother. Unfortunately despite agreeing to stay during a weak moment due to Xiao Qiao’s pleading and seduction, our hero ended up leaving in the end.
  • Left on her own to keep Madam Wei alive, Xiao Qiao watched Madam Wei’s health like a hawk (paying special attention to her herbal medicine that required brewing) and kept a close watch on everyone, including her own mother-in-law.
  • Suspicious when she received report of Mama Wei’s trusted maid secretly met with a widow who might have some connections to Madam Yulou (who had shown up abruptly with her nephew), our heroine’s suspicion turned to alarm when her people later on found out that the widow was in possession of a poison that one single drop of it would cause a person to become sick and die shortly after.
  • Persuaded by her maid that she should patch up her relationship with her mother-in-law, Mama Wei personally made some noodle soup and presented it to Madam Wei. Suspicious that the soup might be posioned, Xiao Qiao walked in with a cat and caused the cat to jump on Mama Wei, flipping the soup onto the ground.
  • Xiao Qiao confessed her suspicion to Madam Wei’s trusted maid. Surprised but figuring it was better safe than sorry, the maid promptly dump the soup into a small fish bowl. Horrified when the fishes all died, Mama Wei and her maid was promptly tied up and brought to Madam Wei. Turns out, Mama Wei knew nothing about the posion but she was actively trying to harm Xiao Qiao. Thanks to her maid’s suggestion, Mama Wei had asked her niece to go to the sorcery temple and obtain a curse doll to put Xiao Qiao’s name on it. Unbeknownst to Mama Wei, her maid was actually working for Madam Yulou and their ultimate goal was to kill our hero’s grandmother. Later in the novel, our hero would punish Madam Yulou for daring to try to harm his grandmother by cutting the end of her nose off.
  • After making sure that Madam Wei’s life was no longer in danger, Xiao Qiao went home to visit her father. This is the visit where Xiao Qiao told Daddy Qiao about her nightmares and convinced her father to start strengthening Qiao Clan. This would later on become a sore point between our two leads that got resolved at the end of the novel. (See novel ending post)
  • While our heroine was gone, Wei Shao finally returned home. Furious when he found out what his mother had done, Wei Shao burned the sorcery temple to the ground and then dragged the temple leader and Mama Wei’s niece to see his mother. Already feeling too ashamed to face her son, Mama Wei fainted from shock once it was revealed that her niece’s supposed ability to bring her “luck” was all a scam she had came up with the sorcery temple leader.
  • Qiao Fan’s (heroine’s cousin) character in the novel was pretty firm and unmovable when it came to both her family and her husband. Instead of living in fear like she did in the drama, in the novel, Qiao Fan was supportive of her husband’s endevor when it came to his military ambition. Qian Fan told Bi Zhi “I am not afraid. From the day I left with you, I told myself, you are who I want for the rest of my life. You live, I live. If something bad happens to you, then I go with you. I am not afraid!”
  • Missing Xiao Qiao terribly, Wei Shao finally got the excuse he needed when his grandmother suggested that he personally go to Yanzhou to get her. Unfortunately, by the time Wei Shao got to Yanzhou, our heroine had already went to see her cousin. After chasing after his wife and always missing her by one step, Wei Shao finally caught up to our heroine after the 4 or 5th time of missing her. When Xiao Qiao guessed that Wei Shao probably came on Madam Wei’s orders, Wei Shao solemnly admitted that “It was myself who wanted to come get you. I missed you, deep to the bone.”
  • Perhaps our hero still instinctively remembered his nemesis from his previous life because Wei Shao pretty much disliked Bi Zhi at first sight. Despite falling more and more in love with our heroine with each passing day, Wei Shao’s hatred for Qiao Clan was still strong and since he obviously can’t hate Xiao Qiao, he pointed that hatred all at Bi Zhi instead. Wei Shao’s dislike for Bi Zhi was so strong that he even ordered one of his ally to attack Bi Zhi. Finding out just in time what Wei Shao intended to do, Xiao Qiao had a fierce fight with Wei Shao. Our heroine felt like she was just a plaything to Wei Shao to be enjoyed in bed and had no effect on his intention to harm her family. On our hero’s side, he felt Xiao Qiao was taking advantage of his feelings for her for thinking that he would put his family’s grudge aside. Our two leads parted in anger. Knowing that Wei Shao was in no mood to listen to her, Xiao Qiao ended up going to Gongsun Yang with Bi Zhi’s letter that promised he would be no threat to Wei Shao in the future. Luckily, Wei Shao’s heart eventually softened after Gongsun Yang talked some sense in to him and he soon rescind his order to attack Bi Zhi.
