• So what’s this mysterious “Golden Scroll” that contains three questions that no one has ever been able to answer? The three questions were written by the First Empress of Da Cheng, Fuya herself. In the novel (not in the drama), Fuya is actually from the modern time so two out of her three questions could only be answered by someone who is also from the modern time…or someone who read the book she wrote as Zhi Wei did. Thanks to the book, Zhi Wei had no problem answering the first two questions and based on her knowledge of Fuya (via reading her book), Zhi Wei also had no trouble answering the third question.
  • At this point, Zhi Wei is still clueless of her connection to Fuya, but this was all part of a greater plan our two leads in Fuya had set up to safeguard their last remaining bloodline.
  • Our hero is pretty torn in this scene. Remember, he still has no clue that the man he is trying to kill is actually Zhi Wei but he is starting to notice the familiarity between the two so when it at first looked like Zhi Wei might’ve been unable to answer the question (our heroine was pausing because she was trying to stop herself from laughing out loud. The answer to the first question was: PANASONIC), instead of feeling relief, Ning Yi actually had the opposite reaction.

The crowd stirs with excitement, pushing forward to witness the birth of the “Nation’s Scholar” after six hundred years. Unable to sit still anymore, Ning Yi stands up and walks out. His glare sharp as he passes Zhi Wei whose expression is still docile and gentle, but right as Ning Yi passes by, Zhi Wei whispers “Your Highness, it is my pleasure to soon become a royal official to work with you.”

Her mood instantly improving greatly as she sees Ning Yi’s shoulder visibly stiffens for a second, Zhi Wei thought “Finally! After losing every time we meet, I have finally won one time!”

  • Zhi Wei is declared to be the “Nation’s Scholar” which makes the Crown Prince extremely happy since the Crown Prince foolishly assumes that Qing Ming College is “his” so that makes Zhi Wei one of his people as well. So pleased to unexpectedly acquire a new ally, the Crown Prince grabs hold of Zhi Wei’s hand and is all smiles. Gu Nan Yi who up to this point was recovering from a hangover finally shows up and pushes the Crown Prince away with only a curt explanation “Mine.” (Assuming Gu Nan Yi’s “Mine” was his way of saying “This is the person I am protecting.” Zhi Wei silently howls at the crazy assumption people will make thanks to Gu Nan Yi’s declaration.)
  • Thanks to Gu Nan Yi’s appearance, Ning Yi finally confirms what his gut instinct has been telling him. That’s why I keep thinking this lad felt familiar, it was her all along, it’s her! So furious that his expression actually became even calmer than usual and his breathing even slower, the expression in Ning Yi’s eyes as he stares at Gu Nan Yi is like a needle that has been burried in the snow of a thousand years. The needle broke through the snow when Gu Nan Yi first appeared and his declaration of “Mine!” only sharpened the needle. Her body unconsciously shivers when she felt a sudden drop in temperature. Zhi Wei rises her head to see the expression on Ning Yi’s face. She has never seen such an expression on his face- like icicles could drip from him at any moment and he would dump them all over her head. “Oh, well.” Zhi Wei thought silently. Who cares if he is angry.
  • Through some quick talking, Zhi Wei finally convinces everyone that Gu Nan Yi is just some eccentric swordsman and not an assassin. However, soon after Zhi Wei calms everyone’s nerve, the real assassins showed up and Gu Nan actually ended up saving the Emperor’s life. The assassins had skipped over the Crown Prince to go after the Emperor which of course makes the Crown Prince look especially suspicious. Too dense to figure out that he just ended up on his father’s short list of suspects, the Crown Prince happily accepts an assignment from the Emperor to personally investigate the incident.
  • Chasing after the assassins himself, Ning Yi was hurt during the process but did manage to bring back one of the assassin’s head and earned an approving nod from the Emperor.

Secretly speculating what Ning Yi is playing at, Zhi Wei wonders what he is trying to achieve. To frame the Crown Prince? That seems unnecessary since the Emperor is already suspicious of his eldest son?

Listening to Ning Yi playing the ever grateful son to the slightest concern from the Emperor, Zhi Wei thought: Your Highness, you were sure born with the talent to be a great actor.

Before Zhi Wei could finish the thought though, she hears Ning Yi respectfully rejects the Emperor’s offer of having the Royal Physician look after his wounds but instead says “Royal Physician should stay by Your Majesty’s side… I have heard that Wei Scholar seems to be quite versed in medicine as well. Can I trouble Wei Scholar to tend to my little wound?”

Speechless, Zhi Wei could only blink her eyes… Really? This guy is really so unwilling to just let her go?

Unfortunately, the Emperor thought Ning Yi’s words were completely reasonable.

Rolling her eyes, Zhi Wei has no choice but to make her way towards the black screen separating her from Ning Yi with Gu Nan Yi following right behind her. Knowing full well that Gu Nan Yi will only cause more trouble, Zhi Wei quickly tells him “I am going to go change!”

Frowning, Gu Nan Yi looks at the black screen seemingly questioning the truth of Zhi Wei’s words, so she quickly adds “Bathroom! Really!”

Gu Nan Yi finally gives up on following her and stands three feet away from the black screen as he watches Zhi Wei makes her way to the “bathroom”.

The moment she ducks behind the black screen, Zhi Wei was greeted by a severely offended Ning Yi…apparently he also heard the “bathroom” explanation.

Ignoring Zhi Wei’s apologetic smile, Ning Yi sits on a velvet bench and holds out his hand.

Impatient when Zhi Wei who really has never learned how to be a servant just stares at his blood-stained sleeve, Ning Yi demands “Change my clothes.”

Giving Ning Yi a slight smile, Zhi Wei offers “Your Highness, three steps to your left is a palace maid. Three steps to your right is a palace eunuch.”In another word, you shouldn’t try to ask me- a National Scholar to do this sort of thing.
Narrowing his eyes, Ning Yi signals the palace maids to come forward but immediately waves his arm the moment one of the maids touches his sleeve sending the maid stumbling backward, bumping into another maid sending the medicine bottle to the ground. Displeased as the two palace maids kneel on the floor pleading for forgiveness, Ning Yi yells “Get out!”
Once the palace maids and the eunuchs all left in a hurry, the anger on Ning Yi’s was promptly wiped away and replaced with a soft smile. Knowing it is pointless to fight anymore or it will just affect the innocent palace servants, Zhi Wei sighs. She should’ve known it was useless to argue with someone like Ning Yi who might look like he doesn’t have a care but in actuality will never back off easily from something he wants.
Zhi Wei bends down to pick up the medicine bottle but the tip of a shoe immediately steps on her fingers.
Rising her head to look at the man who is also bending down, the shoe didn’t have any pressure on her fingers but because of their position, their faces are very close together. Face to face, she can almost feel his breath, Zhi Wei could smell the faint blood mixed with his cool minty smell. Unsure of what to say when Ning Yi stays silent, Zhi Wei knows that there is no point showing this man her facade of gentleness or the real intelligence hidden within. Feeling slightly unsettled by their closeness, Zhi Wei scoots backward only to have Ning Yi lean forward.
Feeling a sudden coolness on her face, Zhi Wei reaches up to touch the spot with her fingertips. Reminded of the blood on her forehead days ago when she sees the blood on her fingertips, Zhi Wei looks up in confusion when Ning Yi asks “I had left a drop of blood on your face that day as well- were you happy? Were you proud of yourself?”
Unsure why Ning Yi would ask that, Zhi Wei felt a loss of words as she mutters “…why would you say that…”
Zhi Wei thought her attitude was sincere, but Ning Yi felt she was just making excuses. Suddenly angry, Ning Yi rises an eyebrow and grabs Zhi Wei. Clueless what Ning Yi is about to do, Zhi Wei unconsciously starts to struggle and felt an abrupt rush of energy swell up in her body as she pushes blindly promptly resulting in a grunt from Ning Yi.
Zhi Wei immediately pulls her hand back when she hears Ning Yi’s grunt, but before she could gather her thoughts, a hand has already wrapped itself around her throat.

ps. Merry Christmas everyone!
