A few fun differences between the novel and the drama:

    • To pay off a debt when she accidentally destroyed some apparently very valuable pills, Zhi Wei ends up working as a helper/servant at a mysterious man’s house whenever she is not working at the brothel. The mysterious physician is a member of the Bloody Pagoda who is there to guide and teach Zhi Wei but he does it in such a way that seems more like he is torturing Zhi Wei. The physician is also the one who gave the book that contains Fuyao’s writing to our heroine.
    • Here are more fun conversations from our two leads in Fuyao in Zhi Wei’s book.
“Yao Yao, please allow me to take a peak.”
      “Shame to Peeping Toms!”
“Those who inform first before they peek should be held as innocent.”  “Those who have been chastised and continues to peek are even more shameful!”
Zhi Wei laughs in amusement as she reads the bickering between the two legendary figures until she suddenly sits up with a start as she reads the next line. “The one who laughs in secret is also shameful.”
Is he talking about her? The one who is laughing? Shaking her head, Zhi Wei assures herself she must be scaring herself. The authors of this book must be long gone, so how could they know about her?
Picking up the book again, Zhi Wei’s hand jerks in shock once again.
“Be careful. You don’t want to damage the book.”
So shocked that she actually ends up calming down, Zhi Wei is certain now the man’s words are directed at her.
Suddenly feeling playful, Zhi Wei holds the book over the stove fire before quickly pulling her hand back.
Reading the next line, the man writes “This book is made with a special leather. It can’t be burned.” The tone suddenly changing seeming directed towards the book’s author, the next line reads “This kid is as naughty as you.”
The woman’s reply comes in the next line, “Why are you using your energy to see into hundreds of years later? Stop scaring people.”
    • Our heroine’s first encounter with Xin Ziyan in the drama is pretty hilarious but the novel’s version was even more hilarious. In the novel, Xin Ziyan’s wife is actually a REALLY big lady who was fairly corse because she is from the village. Despite Xin Ziyan’s tendency to fool around with women, he does love his wife and is willing to put up with whatever his wife does because she is the one that married him while he was still nothing. In the novel, Zhi Wei first meeting with Xin Ziyan is also when he was trying to hide from his wife but instead of hiding him, Zhi Wei actually poured some soy sauce on Xin Ziyan face to make his skin dark, let his hair fall around his face, put a shaw with flower around him to disguise him as a prostitute. So when Xin Ziyan’s wife walks in, what she saw was Zhi Wei (as a man) with her arms around a certain “brothel lady”.

Our two leads’ 4th encounter:

After sending Xin Ziyan on his way after he reluctantly gives her a jade stamp as payment (He didn’t have money on him. Zhi Wei questioned why he would go to a brothel without any money to which Xin Ziyan proudly proclaims that it is the mark of a true man who can charm a concubine without using money.), Zhi Wei runs into someone she was dismayed to see in the brothel- her younger brother Feng Hao. Equally surprised to see his sister there, Feng Hao criticizes Zhi Wei but see no issue with the fact that he is spending his mother’s meager savings at a brothel. Losing his head when he gets in a spat with another rich spoiled nobleman, Feng Hao smacks the young man’s head with a brick causing the young man to fall unconscious to the ground with blood pooling quickly around him. Realizing he is in big trouble especially when it sounds like a crowd is heading his way, Feng Hao resolutely puts the brick into Zhi Wei’s hand- the very sister who a second ago had grabbed his hand to pull him away to safety, and runs off on his own leaving our heroine standing there to be caught as a murder.

Shocked and hurt to be betrayed by her own brother, Zhi Wei unconsciously tightens her hand around the brick immediately turning it into dust. Stunned by what just happened to the brick, Zhi Wei tries to repeat what she just did to a smaller brick fragment but found her sudden strength is gone. (This is a hint to the energy that has been hiding in Zhi Wei’s body and a promise that our heroine will eventually become a great fighter.)

Shaking the dust off her hand, Zhi Wei yells in an astonished voice “Ah! This man suddenly fell down! We need to rush him to a physician!” Slowly backing away during the chaos, Zhi Wei almost made her escape…until Ning Yi and the 10th Prince showed up.

Zhi Wei bites the corner of her lips with some embarrassment- She just promised a certain someone that the next time they meet no dead bodies will be involved… and this is what happened.

In fact, this is even worse than before.

She is after all a lady and usually lives her life with decorum so why is the timing always so bad whenever they meet?

  • With other people around them this time, our heroine quickly figures out from their words our hero’s identity. As Zhi Wei tries to recollect what she knows of the sixth prince, we also find out more about our hero.
  • Ning Yi was welcomed into this world with great expectations since his birth was accompanied by signs in the sky. However, the signs didn’t bring luck to the 6th Prince because his mother died a few months later. According to the rumor, Ning Yi didn’t start to talk until he was three years old but once he was able to talk he stunned the whole nation with his intelligence until he was declared to be the smartest scholar at the age of seven. However, all that brilliance was just a brief flash. The year the nation of Tian Sheng was established, the seven year old 6th Prince fell gravely ill. His personality changed drastically after his near brush with death, the 6th Prince lost all of his brilliance after that and begin to spend all of his time dallying in the vices of this world…especially women.
  • Ning Yi plays along with Zhi Wei’s act and challenges her to take them to where the real perpetrator is if she is innocent. Sorely tempted to ousted her own brother but eventually deciding against it, Zhi Wei leads the crowd to where the mysterious physician’s house is knowing if anyone can get away, he would be able to. Unexpectedly chancing upon the mysterious physician in the middle of a fight with two other unknown men, Zhi Wei was almost injured when one of the men attacks her but she was saved by Ning Yi then promptly whisked away by another man. Slightly hurt in the process because Zhi Wei had deliberately messed with his horse saddle when she had pretended to pet his horse before, Ning Yi is left to speculate that Zhi Wei had planned the whole thing with the unknown man who had taken her away.
  • Who is the unknown man? He is our second male lead, Gu Nan Yi. One interesting about Gu Nan Yi in the novel that the drama wisely didn’t try to replicate is that Gu Nan Yi is supposed to be this SUPER good looking guy. Super good looking as anyone who sees him would end up forgetting everything else and just stare at him in wonder, so that’s why he wears a veil.
