Aired: 1/18/2024

Novel adaptation?: No, but it’s adapted from a Chinese computer game.

Total episodes: 36

Leads: Xu Kai (Ancient Love Poetry) & Esther Yu (Love Between Fairy and Devil)

Where to watch: Viki.com

Synopsis: After waking up together in a village without any memory of their past, our two leads have been on a mission to reclaim their memories. In their quest, our two leads will end up meeting a nefarious cult and a cursed clan who want to expose the evil dong of the cult. Will all these seemingly unconnected yet mysterious people and events eventually help our two leads find their past…and each other?

First Impression: I am five episodes in and I am feeling tentatively hopeful about Sword and Fairy. The story is still in the setup stage but thus far, I feel the show has done a good job at keeping up with the suspense yet not overdoing it as to make the story confusing. Sword and Fairy probably fall into the C-immortal fantasy genre (like Last Immortal) at first glance since we are dealing with fairies and demons after all. However, the show really has more of Wuxia vibe which helped make the show feel fresh for me.

I had pretty high hopes for Xu Kai and Esther Yu’s pairing before the show aired. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed. The show started off with our two leads more like siblings so their chemistry was super cute and fun, but by the time we were going into episode six, their chemistry was definitely heating up!

Ninja’s verdict: Too early to call yet for me, but just on the star power of our two leads and their chemistry, I am planning to keep watching for now.
