My Country: The New Age
Set in the tumultuous time right before the Goryeo dynasty ended and the rise of the Joseon dynasty, My Country follows two young men who were like brothers but must fight one another due to their differences in the future they want for their country.
Our heroine is a young woman who was raised by courtesans. Determined to do her part to change her country, our heroine’s destiny soon becomes intertwined with those of our two heroes’.
This one looks solid all around. The three leads have great chemistry with each other…which I am afraid might translate into a very painful love triangle. The bromance between our two leads also looks awesome so for those of you who like bromance then this one is definitely worth checking out.
Jang Hyuk is not one of the three main leads but plays historical figure Lee Bang Won who helped his father (Taejo of Joseon) overthrow the Goryeo empire.
This one is on Netflix.
Your Secret (Chinese Drama)
As a medical student, our heroine is assigned to intern with our hero who is the chief medical forensic examiner. At first glance, our heroine seems to be your usual bumbling intern and our hero is your typical stoic no-nonsense doc…however, things get interesting once we find out that our hero is actually the twin older brother to our heroine’s deceased ex-boyfriend.
This one is based on a popular C-criminal suspense novel. There are some complaints online that the drama had done a disservice to the story by ramping up the romance between our two leads (the romance was there in the novel but apparently it wasn’t very prominent since the novel focused mostly on the criminal cases). However, not having read the novel before, I personally liked the balance the drama had between the criminal cases and the two leads’ romance.
Sherlock: Untold Story
J-drama has been on a Sherlock kick lately (with Miss Sherlock that just came out in April of last year). Dean Fujioka (The Count of Monte-Cristo: Great Revenge) plays Sherlock. Episode one will be a setup episode where Sherlock meets Watson who had gotten himself in a bit of tight spot when a doctor in his hospital died under suspicious circumstances.
I enjoyed the first episode but I am not sure it really stood out from the MANY different versions of Sherlock we already have. Without the Sherlock bent, I would place this one as your typical J-criminal mystery. Still, I think the show is decent enough that if you are a Sherlock fan and went in with a modest expectation you should enjoy it anyway.
Cheat (Japanese Drama, New)
As the head of Cheat team that specializes in targeting swindlers who prey on innocent people, our 25 year old heroine hides a secret under her no-nonsense appearance. During her off time, our heroine is also a member of a rather unsuccessful idol group that has to accept random jobs to survive.
This one felt like a fairly typical lighter J-crime drama with plenty of wacky humor. I am pretty intrigued though by how our heroine is going to balance her two extremely different personas especially since her idol one is cute and ditzy.
My Girlfriend (Chinese Drama, New)
Convinced that she is cursed to never find love after a traumatic incident at the age of 17, our heroine is determined to keep challenging fate…which is why by the age of 27 she has confessed over thirty times…and has been rejected every single time. To make her situation even more hopeless, our heroine faints after she is rejected.
Suspicious that our heroine might be a stalker at first when he keeps running into her in various unpleasant circumstances, our hero, a TV producer who just took over what everyone thought to be a doomed variety show suddenly realizes that our heroine is exactly the person he needs to make his show a wild success once he finds out about her “curse”.
Episode one felt a bit slow but the show improved by the third episode. Lately, C-drama has put out a few of these “Let’s just throw a bunch of weird stuff together and make a story with that” sort of shows and while some were definitely duds there was surprisingly a number of winners so I am hoping this one will be the later group. I have a few shows that I am trying to catch up on but once I am done with those I think I might check back on this one.
