Accidentally In Love (Chinese Web Drama, New)
An heiress in disguise as a plain ordinary girl, our heroine meets our superstar hero who ends up accidentally robbing her of her first kiss the very first time they meet. Meeting each other once again as deskmates in college, our two leads’ romance begins to blossom through their bickering.
This one looks fun but I seem to be in the mood for something meatier lately so I am passing on it.
The Dark Lord (Chinese Drama, New)
A light comedy set in ancient China, The Dark Lord tells the story of how one lowly prison guard ends up pretending to be a government official. Despite his reluctance to play a fake official, our hero nonetheless can’t look the other way when there is injustice before him and decides to become a champion of justice….fake offical or not.
For those of you who followed Love Lost In Time, you will recognize our hero here as the actor (Joe Xu) that played the male second lead Yuan Zhan. Joe Xu’s character as Yuan Zhan in Love Lost In Time was so serious and melo that it was really refreshing to see him play a witty comedic hero here in The Dark Lord.
The Rise of Phoenixes (Chinese Drama, New)
Based on the popular novel Huang Quan, penned by the same author that gave us Fuyao, The Rise of Phoenixes also tells the doomed romance of our two leads who are born to be enemies. Believing herself to be an illegitimate child, our heroine disguises herself as a man and enters into an academy and comes out of it as an official with stunning talent both in politics and military strategy. Falling in love with our hero who the whole world mistakenly believes to be the useless 6th prince, our heroine is horrified to learn that the man she loves is the reason her family was destroyed and she has no choice but to kill him to avenge her family. (I used the word doomed to describe our two leads’ romance but I am hoping we will still have a happy ending anyway.)
Fuyao’s romantic pacing was fairly fast and the story leaned more on the heroine’s side but The Rise of Phoenixes instead chose to go heavy on palace intrigue, light on the romance (for now) and focuses mostly on our hero’s story. On first look, it seems like The Rise of Phoenixes would lose to Fuyao automatically, but I wouldn’t be so fast to dismiss The Rise of Phoenixes. Chen Kun, an actor who has spent most of his time in movies but has recently returned to the small screen is crazy good as our hero! As I mentioned before, our hero is outwardly a useless prince but in truth, he is extremely smart and is set on seeking revenge for his older brother’s wrongful death. As one who is usually very impatient with palace intrigue, I find myself mesmerized every time our hero shows up on the screen and can’t wait to see him outsmart his foes. The few scenes our two leads have shared on screen does look extremely promising so I think once the romance gets going it should be sizzling.
Love Horribly (Korean Drama, New)
Park Si Hoo plays a top star who has enjoyed unnaturally good luck…until he meets our heroine- the one whose luck was stolen and transferred to him. Born at the same time, our two leads are fated to share polar opposite fate. If one is lucky then the other one is doomed to be besieged by bad luck. Our two leads begin to work on a drama script together but mysterious events matching what they wrote start to happen in real life.
I went into this one expecting it to be fairly scary but the vibe ended up being more silly than frightening so I was a tad bit disappointed. One bigger concern I have is that Park Si Hoo’s character is a scaredy cat who ends up hiding behind our heroine. I am sure the show will redeem our hero eventually and Park Si Hoo’s character is serving his comedic purpose for now, but still, it’s kinda difficult to warm up to a show with such a wimp for a hero.
Number Woman Gye Sook Ja (Korean Web Drama, New)
Secretly nicknamed by her subordinates as the robot, our heroine is gifted with an impressive sensitivity towards numbers and regards everything around her as emotionless number figures. Realizing our heroine is hiding a secret trauma, our hero, a lawyer who champions for children’s right internationally, try to help our heroine overcome her past.
