Chinese Drama: Sweet Dreams (一千零一夜)
Broadcast Date: June 25, 2018
Total Episodes: 45
Leads: Dilraba Dilmurat & Deng Lun
Synopsis:
A romantic girl at heart, our heroine, Ling Lingqi spends all her time learning the art of floral arrangement in hopes one day she will be able to work for Hua Jia, a floral company owed by her idol- Bo Hai. A famous floral designer, Bo Hai is a workaholic with trouble sleeping but thanks to his best friend’s gift of a new sleep aid bracelet he has been finally getting several nights of solid rest.
Dejected at first when she realizes that she has little hope of ever meeting her idol even after she is hired on by Hua Jia as a lowly store assistant, Linggi is overjoyed once she discovered her new sleep aid bracelet actually connects her dreams with our hero’s every night.
Gleefully entering into our hero’s dream every night to “rescue” him from the big bad dragon, our heroine wants to believe that she is getting closer to her idol…but would dreams ever become reality?
First Impression:
This one looks really cute! I usually dislike overtly naive bumbling heroine characters, but of course Dilraba Dilmurat has a special talent in making this sort of character endearing instead of annoying. (Case in point: her super cute character in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.) It probably also helps that I love our heroine is the one who “saves” our hero from the dragon (for some reason there is always a dragon pursuing our hero) instead of the usual Prince charming riding in to save the damsel in distress.
By the way, for those who are not familiar with actor Deng Lun, you probably will remember him from his role as Xiao Ce, the crown prince who became the heroine’s best friend in Princess Agents. I am not familiar with Deng Lun as an actor other than his very memorable role in Princess Agents so it was a pleasant surprise to see him playing the male lead finally.
I was a bit worried at first that Sweet Dreams will be all fluff and no substance since the show gets silly at parts but thankfully it doesn’t take long for our heroine to figure out that our hero in the real world is nothing like the prince that exists in her imagination or her dreams. Because of the synopsis, I was prepared for the plot to focus mostly on our two leads’ interactions in their dreams but luckily, the show was more realistic than that and it looks the majority of our two leads’ romantic development will happen in real life. The show was quite amusing right from the beginning when our heroine was the fervent fangirl, but for some reason, the story became even more amusing when our heroine finally “sees” our hero’s true color and tries to avoid him despite the dictates of the drama gods.
All in all, Sweet Dreams is looking like it will be a lot of fun with a surprising amount of depth!
