Feng Zhi Wei suddenly stretched out her hand and pulled Gu Nan Yi hard.

With a bang, Gu Nan Yi fell on top of her. Feng Zhi Wei immediately wrapped her arms around him and rolled. The tip of the blue knife sunk into the deck with a clang.

The dagger owner was about to pull it out but Feng Zhi Wei kicked the dagger. The dagger jumped up from the ground, the blue light flashed, and with a yelp, the man’s fingers had been cut off.

Feng Zhi Wei let out a breath of relief and suddenly felt someone moving on top of her. She belatedly realized that she was hugging Master Gu very tightly. She was too nervous just now, and with only thoughts of saving him, she didn’t pay attention to how much strength she was using. Somehow Gu Nan Yi didn’t struggle at all.

She blushed and quickly retracted her hand. Seemingly a bit dazed, Gu Nan Yi suddenly rubbed his face against the side of her neck. He then raised his head and thought for a moment with a confused expression before getting up to go continue fighting.

Feng Zhi Wei got up quickly and touched her own neck. It was burning hot to the touch, she could only imagine that she must have turned bright red. She thought about the way that guy rubbed his face against her just now and was relieved they were in the middle of a chaotic fight so no one would have noticed. If they were anywhere else at any other time, she would probably yet again get a reputation of being a “broken sleeve.” (broken sleeve=man liking man)

This was of course not the time to wax poetic, she had just gotten up when she felt a flash of light from a sword heading straight for her face. She quickly refocused and continued fighting.

Off to the side, Second Prince was feeling a little anxious as he watched. The martial arts of these several people all exceeded his expectations. Even the civil servant Wei Zhi is quite a good fighter but he had never heard anything about it. He had thought that bringing these elite fighters he hired with large sum of money would be enough to eradicate these people but who would imagine they could hold off until now? What’s more, he has lost quite a few of his own people. Of those who surrounded Gu Nan Yi, only two men and four women remained.

Rubbing his chin with a hand, Second Prince was lost in thought as he recalled that he had seemingly heard of some rumors previously that had to do with Ning Yi, Wei Zhi, and Gu Nan Yi. Something like about being a broken sleeve, or about Gu Nan Yi being very important to Wei Zhi. There was also the suggestion someone had half-jokingly said to him. He had originally thought it was ridiculous, but now looking at the behaviors of Wei Zhi and the others, he is starting to think the suggestion might be very feasible.

There was a chilling look in Second Prince’s eyes– today, it is either them or him, so he might as well try anything!

He made eye contact with a certain person.

At this point, due to the movement of the fighting, Ning Yi and Gu Nan Yi were very close. They were almost side by side facing their respective enemies. They could clearly see Feng Zhi Wei’s situation with one glance but Feng Zhi Wei would need to turn her head in order to see them.

Feng Zhi Wei was on a roll when she suddenly heard a muffled grunt behind her.

The voice vaguely sounded like Gu Nan Yi’s. She turned abruptly only to see something flashing past the chaotic color of the dead leaf butterfly, followed by Gu Nan Yi falling silently with no warning!

Feng Zhi Wei’s face contorted as if she was struck by a thunderbolt. She kicked away the opponent in front of her, and desperately threw herself back with all her strength. But before she could get there, the people who were besieging Gu Nan Yi had already dispersed, revealing Gu Nan Yi, leaning against the side of the boat with a hand pressed against his heart. A small blue crossbow arrow poking out between his fingers!

Feng Zhi Wei’s eyes turned red when she saw the crossbow arrow. She kicked and punched to rush her way there but before she could reach Gu Nan Yi something suddenly caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. She abruptly turned her head in mid-air and looked around, her eye finally landing on Ning Yi’s sleeve.

Over there, there was a glint of black light.

Ning Yi stood next to Gu Nan Yi, frowning, a hand grabbing his own sleeve as if he still couldn’t react to something. Feng Zhi Wei pounced on him, grabbed his sleeve, and turned it over.

A dark black crossbow fell into her hand. There were still arrows on the crossbow, giving off the same blue hue against her snow-white palm.

Feng Zhi Wei stood there stunned and slowly turned her head with some difficulty. Next to them, very close to Ning Yi, the arrow on Gu Nan Yi’s chest was exactly the same as the small arrow on the crossbow.

“Ha ha!”

The unmoving Gu Nan Yi with an arrow in his chest, Ning Yi standing stunned staring at the crossbow blankly, and Feng Zhi Wei whose face had turned pale white. In an instant, a solemn, oppressive, and strange atmosphere between the three of them caused everyone to stop involuntarily, the whole place falling into a deathly silence. In the deathly silence, only Second Prince’s brazen laughter can be heard.

“Looks like I didn’t have to waste my energy killing you three after all.” Second Price laughed heartily, “You all are getting the job done just fine amongst yourselves, haha, Prince Chu is certainly the charming lover. I have long heard that Old Sixth is interested in Official Wei but kept getting hindered because of Guardsman Wei. Now…he has finally gotten his heart’s desire?’

He patted his knee gleefully, his laugh full of sarcasm and satisfaction, “Old Sixth’s secret crossbow, why wasn’t he more careful and ended up shooting his companion? Perhaps he had long wanted to get rid of this thorn in his side, but alas, the thorn was too good of a fighter. However, seeing such a perfect opportunity today, he got too excited and finally…accidentally killed him?”

His last three words were said softly, but full of viciousness.

“Ning Yi—” Hearing his words, Feng Zhi Wei whose whole body had been trembling, suddenly stopped shaking. She took a deep breath, her fists clenched as she slowly walked towards Ning Yi who was still standing there looking dazed, and said calmly,

“You did it on purpose, right?”

“No, I…”

Before Ning Yi could answer, Feng Zhi Wei suddenly pounced viciously at him.

“If you want to kill him, then kill me first!”

She threw her whole body forward like a cannonball, whizzing through the air in a blue line, and arriving in front of Ning Yi in an instant. Seemingly still in his stupor, but seeing her crashing into him like this, Ning Yi subconsciously reached out a hand to catch her and said, “Listen to me…” Before he could finish his sentence, Feng Zhi Wei had arrived. While in mid-air, she had flicked her wrist, a black light flashed, sending a thin and low shadow straight toward Ning Yi’s throat. The air in all directions seemed to be squeezed by the hissing vibrations, and the strong wind caused people on both sides to back away, all shocked as they looked on at this all out attack.

Ning Yi had been leaning against the side of the ship. Once people were scattered, then they were all standing across from him. All people could see was Feng Zhi Wei’s back arriving in front of Ning Yi in an instant. They saw Ning Yi shrouded in the light and shadow, anger flashed through his eyes, and after a slight hesitation, he raised his hand and the crossbow flashed with dark light.

The sharp arrow pierced the air, different from Feng Zhi Wei’s violent whirlwind but it was like a sharp needle shooting through the air, instantly penetrating through the fierce force in the air, cutting it into pieces in an instant.

However, when facing an enemy, hesitation is a matter of life and death. Although the needle was sharp but it was a moment slower and could not break this overwhelming momentum. The light and shadow, flashed then darkened, and blood splashed.

“Bang.”

Feng Zhi Wei crushed into Ning Yi hard.

Between the two of them, a bright neon light suddenly bursted out and exploded above the ship’s side, in front of everyone’s eyes.

The side of the ship couldn’t withstand such force and promptly broke. Ning Yi fell backward but before he fell, he took a firm hold of Feng Zhi Wei’s sleeve. Two of them were entangled together as they rolled down.

“Bang.”

There was another muffled sound, the sound of a human body firmly hitting the muddy tidal flat.

The End

Ha ha, just kidding. I was typing and it suddenly occurred to me that I would have preferred if the drama had ended this way if the production was determined to force a tragic ending onto this story. If our two leads could not have their happy ending, then this was the most likely ending based on their respective personalities. Ning Yi himself has “predicted” a few times that Feng Zhi Wei would take his life. At first, that premonition was met with a determination from Ning Yi to get rid of our heroine for good…and later, the fact that if no happy ending were possible then at the very least they would probably die together became a strange sort of comfort to him. So why the assumption both of them would die instead of Feng Zhi Wei just killing Ning Yi and riding off into the sunset with her Master Gu? On a practical front, it was very unlikely our heroine could kill Ning Yi without doing it herself since she was the only one who could get him to lower his guard. On the emotional front, Ning Yi is simply not the sort who would let our heroine kill him and allow her to live to ride off into the sunset with another man…even if that man is Gu Nan Yi. Ning Yi has hinted several times that he only sees two endings 1. He becomes the emperor and Feng Zhi Wei is his empress. 2. He and Feng Zhi Wei die together. One gets the feeling that while Ning Yi definitely prefers the first option he doesn’t seem to mind the second option too terribly much either. My personal opinion is that both of our leads have not received much love from others (especially at a young age from their families) in life, so I think neither of them really believes a happy ending is possible for people like themselves. Perhaps in Ning Yi’s mind, a happy ending was just a wistful dream while dying together with Feng Zhi Wei was a much more realistic hope. Luckily for us, our author was able to grant them (and us the readers) a third option.
