Feng Zhi Wei saw this whole scene clearly and her eyes narrowed. Ning Cheng’s martial arts is only second to Gu Nan Yi yet even he is cornered to such a sorry state to the point that he wasn’t even able to pull out the signal flare. Certainly, his sloppiness contributed to the result a bit but one could still tell that Second Prince really did pull out all the stops and is determined to keep them forever in this reed swamp.
Sitting surrounded by a crowd of guards, Second Prince sneered and suddenly raised his hand.
The four women in colorful clothes surrounding Gu Nan Yi abruptly started to spin round and round. The mess of color started to twirl with their turning, making people around them feel dizzy and upset as if a fistful of thorns had been plunged into their hearts. As the women spun around, a cold light suddenly flashed and a short blade shot out at a strange angle from one of the women!
Off to the side, Feng Zhi Wei saw the blade clearly. Fearing that Gu Nan Yi would be distracted, Feng Zhi Wei was already waiting with her sword in hand. Before she could take action though, Gu Nan Yi sneered coldly, pulled on her sleeve, and dragged her to his side. With a casual flick of his finger, a strong force shot out and turned that short blade right around, shooting straight at the four women. Seeing the short blade coming back towards them, the women quickly dodged with panicked expressions. As expected, the short blade shook mid-air and exploded with a bang, shooting out several smaller flying blades, but none landed any targets.
Feng Zhi Wei breathed a sigh of relief, glad that while the chaotic colors were annoying it seemingly did not have the power to incapacitate Gu Nan Yi’s mind or his fighting ability. The scattered women suddenly exchanged a glance and once again gathered together again. With a spread of their bodies, Feng Zhi Wei’s vision was dazzled for an instant, and then she saw a thin layer of colorful clothes falling on the ground. In the next moment, the clothes on the women have all changed color. They went from wearing ugly multicolor clothes to bright dazzling red.
With their clothes changed, the women attacked in unison once again like ghosts, their claws spread wide, rushing towards them like a big blob of moving sticky blood, with their flying black hair sticking to them getting closer and closer. The view was enough to make one want to vomit. There was even a thick smell of blood emanating from the moving blob. Gu Nan Yi’s irritation increased, but his hands did not slow. With a flick of his sleeves, a force of wind appeared out of nowhere, and like dusting away ashes, the blob of “moving blood” was flicked away. The women stumbled around and bumped into each other, one of them even hit her head on the side of the boat and ended up dyeing herself red with blood for real.
The women got up, looked at each other once again, and then let out a sharp scream. With a twirl of their bodies, they changed the color of their clothes yet again in the blink of an eye. This time it was an earthy color, yet not a pure solid color but there was a faint red, dark purple, and deathly white mix in it. Like…like the land after a war– drunken with blood and white bones, filled with rotting flesh and body parts. A look that had even more visual impact than the bright red they had just now.
Gu Nan Yi’s breathing became faster. Feng Zhi Wei looked at him worriedly, guarding his back while keeping a close eye on the group of women. Her attention was completely on Gu Nan Yi, a sudden low whistle came from the front, and an arrow came flying at a rapid speed. The arrow was as powerful as lightning, aiming right for her heart!
A white and green light flashed. Two pairs of hands reached out at the same time. One person held the arrow’s head while the other person took hold of the arrow’s tail. The two looked at each other, each exerting force. With a cracking sound, the arrow broke in half.
Hearing the crisp snapping sound, Feng Zhi Wei looked at the expression in the two men’s eyes as their gaze met, she couldn’t help but shudder for no reason.
Ning Yi patted her shoulder and said softly, “Don’t worry about others, protecting yourself is the most important thing.” Without looking back, he raised his hand and shot the half arrow downward with lightning speed. “Ah!” a sound came as a man who had wanted to sneak up from the water to attack him was pierced right in the head by the half-arrow falling from the sky. He sank instantly, leaving a layer of thick and bright blood spreading out on the water.
Gu Nan Yi raised his hand and also threw his half of the broken arrow. The arrow turned left and right as if it actually had eyes, bypassing the crowd and heading straight for Second Prince. Second Prince stood up in a hurry and stumbled backward until the arrow nailed the corner of his robe to the deck with a clanging sound.
“Change! Change!” Second Prince forcefully pulled his robe free, waved his fist, and shouted.
Before Feng Zhi Wei figured out the meaning of Second Prince’s words, the women moved again. For a moment, their bodies were like snakes, and their thin and tight-fitting colorful clothes were like the skins shed by snakes, layer upon layer. From red to yellow, from yellow to brown, from brown to green, every time they spread their bodies they would change color, every color change was accompanied by their attack. Not discouraged after being beaten back time after time, they changed one color after another until layers of ultra-thin colorful clothes were piled on the ground. Heaven knows how they were able to wear so many layers of clothes and how they were able to change out of them in an instant. Judging by their actions, it looks like they are determined not to stop until they find a color that is utterly unacceptable to Gu Nan Yi.
Feng Zhi Wei stood there dazed and stunned— what is this? Magic changing of clothes?
Gu Nan Yi’s breathing is becoming more and more rapid. After so many color changes, it seemed his inner anxiety and weakness had finally been forced out. By nature, he was already one who was extra sensitive. To ordinary people, this world is as smooth as glass. But in his eyes, the world is fragmented, broken, filled with squeaky sounds, and chaotic colors. The roughness of the clothes irritated him and caused him pain. After being with Feng Zhi Wei, this pain was slowly lessened by her silent yet insistent help. Despite his ability to accept has been broadened, he still couldn’t withstand such chaotic and violent provocation. His hands hidden inside his sleeves, gradually started to sweat.
By this time, the women have changed to yet another color– a yellowish brown, like a dead leaf butterfly. It is impossible to tell whether it is a fallen leaf or a butterfly, surrounded by strange and messy patterns, reminiscent of the corpses in the gloomy and dim sunlight in a dense forest as large swaths of demon butterflies take flight from the dead bodies.
Gu Nan Yi’s body suddenly jerked.
As if a world that has been calm for a long time has been hit hard by an external force, shattering the reinforced protective shield, and exposing the fragile cracked world inside.
*KENG!*
Almost as soon as they had finally found the thing that Gu Nan Yi hated the most, the men who had been holding instruments but had just stood off to the side suddenly started to play the instruments in their hands in unison!
They made noises, not playing.
In an instant, ear-piercing sounds from the various instruments attacked their hearing. Beautiful instruments that could have been played wonderfully in harmony were brutally destroyed. By hitting and use of friction, the ensemble produced a sound that was indescribably strange, sounds that made one’s head spin with dizziness from just hearing it!
Producing strange ear-piercing sounds and displaying nauseating colors at the same time, the two groups of people rushed toward Gu Nan Yi in unison.
With an order from Second Prince, the elite fighters on the deck all rushed to attack Feng Zhi Wei and Ning Yi.
Gu Nan Yi suddenly set Gu Zhi Xiao down. Instead of handing her to Feng Zhi Wei, he set her into a bucket next to him. There was still water in the bucket and his gesture of putting her down was anything but gentle. There was a loud bang as water splashed everywhere. Feng Zhi Wei thought the pampered Gu Zhi Xiao was bound to cry but the child didn’t let out a sound. She wiped clean the smelly water from her face, bit her lips, and huddled herself inside the bucket with big wide eyes. It seemed that she understood very clearly that her father was in danger and that she couldn’t help, so she didn’t let herself cry or fuss to become a burden.
Feng Zhi Wei’s heart sank– Gu Nan Yi had always carried his Gu Zhi Xiao with him when he fought. No matter when or where he is always confident that he can protect Gu Zhi Xiao, but now, he has set her down.

Uh oh, this is turning into a real problem.
Epic battle, defeat, escape? At least one of them needs to be freed?
These surreal/magical fights are a dimension almost completely missing from the drama. It makes the drama’s protagonists largely lacking one dimension of their relationship, the spiritual one. That spiritual kinship that makes their bond so extraordinary.
What also strikes me about these novel texts, while the setting may be brutal and dangerous, the mood is rather vibrant and energetic. No constant shadows of hopelessness here.
Of course I don’t know how it is in the omitted parts.
Thank you so much, Ninja! You convey that crazy scenery so captivatingly, finding powerful words!
And my feeling is you’ve gotten even better over the years.
What a cliffhanger. Such vibrant descriptions. Can’t thank you enough for all the hard work translating! Thank you for letting those of us who would otherwise be blocked by language enjoy such a beautiful story.
I felt sensory overload just reading – poor Gu Nanyi!!! I think the drama did really well showing his communication difficulties, but they didn’t show this scene at all which is a shame. The drama sort of shied away from more explicitly telling the audience he’s autistic, unlike the author who does so throughout, especially here. I really like that they gave such importance and recognition to his relationship with Gu Zhi Xiao and makes the fact he puts her down so significant. Like Zhiwei, my heart sank too! He’s really in trouble…
Bravo for the epic description..I could literally sense Feng zhi’ s heart beat ..
Which indicates two things :
* The greatness of the writer
*The genuine vibrancy of the translation
