This one tells the story of two divorce lawyers who had gone through their own bitter divorce years ago but have now ended up working at the same firm.

With only 12 episodes total, the story progressed fairly quickly but it didn’t feel rushed at all. The show also didn’t feel episodic even though there were different cases that came and go. The cases themselves were interesting but the show was fairly focused on our two leads’ relationship, which I liked.

Strangers Again definitely fall into the more mature romance category as it deals with some fairly realistic issues that come up in marriage and human conflicts that are often unavoidable in relationships. With that in mind, as one who tries to only watch shows with “good” endings, I do have to warn you that the ending to Strangers Again wasn’t the most popular one judging by the viewers’ comments online. Personally, I didn’t mind the ending at all. It was realistic and even hopeful in my view. For those who don’t mind spoilers or have watched the show already, you can keep scrolling down for my take on the ending.

SPOILERS AHEAD

As one who loves happy endings and really doesn’t see the need to torture myself watching sad endings in my drama world when there are plenty of sad endings in real life, I was strangely okay with the manner the show ended. In fact, I actually took the leads’ silent question to each other of “Can we really…become strangers again?” as a very hopeful sign of a happy ending…eventually.

To me, the question “Can we really…become strangers again?” can go two ways. First, it can mean doubt. As in, for two of us who love each other so much and have failed to “move on” even after so many years, can we really let go of each other? Our hero’s decision to see a therapist to finally work on his emotional trauma was the result of his body going haywire after his realization that he might truly lose our heroine this time. It shows his acknowledgment of his own unwillingness to end things with our heroine and what’s more importantly, finally a will to fix things inside himself so a happy ending can be possible in the future. Before our two leads said goodbye towards the end of the final episode, our hero had mentioned that he was babysitting his sister’s two kids regularly now and that he finds them to be very cute. My guess is that the babysitting was perhaps a suggestion from his therapist to begin working on his trauma concerning child caring so the fact he found the kids cute seems to indicate that he was making good progress.

The second way I read the question “Can we really…become strangers again?” is that our two leads actually want to become strangers because that meant they have buried all their past pains behind them and they can start anew as two strangers. One important thing to remember is that this question was asked silently by both of our leads so it wasn’t a one-sided desire.

All in all, while the show didn’t give us the typical “chase you down at the airport” sort of happy ending, I thought the ending was realistic and gave enough easter eggs to make me fairly certain that our two leads will find a way to have their happy ending with each other.
