“Happy?” Ning Yi paused, then repeated “Happy?” Suddenly breaking out in a low laugh, Ning Yi wipes away the speck of blood on his mouth with the back of his hand. Staring at the blood, Ning Yi mutters “I once thought she was happy. That’s what I believed this past ten years! But just now, I finally found out how wrong I was!”
“See that secret passage?” Ning Yi angrily points towards the passage’s direction “My father. That father of mine still wanted to satisfy his own carnal desire after all. He couldn’t risk other people seeing him coming here so he had this passage built, had the statue made…made THAT!”
Getting more furious as he spoke, Ning Yi finally coughed out a mouthful of blood, followed by more incessant coughing.
As for Ning Yi’s mother… What and how did she endure for a chance to spend a few precious moments with her son? Perhaps she had remained silent out of fear that if she opened her mouth then the tears couldn’t be stopped.”
Silence fall as Ning Yi voice trails off as he stares at the fire basin.
Zhi Wei’s hand is still pressed against his back…and for a second, she started to reach towards his shoulder but finally slowly pulls back after the hand hangs mid-air for a long moment.
What chaos would it raise if Prince Helian’s fiancée and Ning Yi were found together in a room in a state of undress?!
In one smooth move, Zhi Wei jumps up, grabs her clothes and begins to put them on as she darts over to the window only to see a group of guards has already arrived.
Quickly buttoning up her clothes, Zhi Wei suddenly remembers the other day Princess Shao Ning had said “The best is yet to come…” while standing at the palace garden. Come to think of it, this place is behind the palace garden and Princess Shao Ning was looking right towards this direction when she said it.
It’s her own fault that she got distracted first by the rain then Ning Yi so she didn’t even make the connection.
Princess Shao Ning’s laugh can be heard now as the crowd gets closer “Prince Helian, I have been here once when I was young. It has long been abandoned but it will probably be good to check anyway. Who knows perhaps Zhi Wei mistakenly came this way….”
Zhi Wei abruptly turns around, her gaze meeting Ning Yi’s who has been putting on his clothes as well and they both instantly realize what Princess Shao Ning is planning. The plan is quite simple really. The only thing Princess Shao Ning wants is to catch Ning Yi at this place. As long as she can catch him here, then there is nothing Ning Yi could say to clear his own name. On the day when everyone is celebrating Royal Concubine Chang’s birthday in the palace, if Ning Yi is found here then the Emperor, who knows the real meaning of this place will be displeased and become suspicious of Ning Yi.
Ning Yi knows full as well that he can’t be found here or else he would not have chosen to show up here without a single guard on the day when the whole palace is preoccupied with the festivities.
As for Zhi Wei…no one expected her to be here. She was just the unlucky gal at the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet, if she was to be discovered with Ning Yi, then the damage to her reputation is a small matter but she won’t be able to escape unscathed either if something else worse resulted from it.
Their gaze meets again, both know clearly what’s at stake.

Thank you
Okay then, when did Zhi Wei become Prince Helian fiance? This scene is definitely different from the drama.
They are not officially engaged or anything. He went to the Qiu manor and asked for her hand…lost to Gu Nan Yi and the bet. Pretty soon after that, Helian figures out that Zhi Wei and Wei Zhi is the same person so he shows up at the academy as a student to get his daily beating by Gu Nan Yi. Prince Helian is invited to the Palace to attend the party and on his return RSVP he wrote that he will be attending with his fiancee Feng Zhi Wei. That’s why everyone kept calling Zhi Wei his fiancee. Sorry, I should have included that in the beginning of the post.
Woot Woot love the update
Thank you 😍
Thanks!!! I have been looking forward to Mondays every now just for this!
I checked out Viki but apparently ou must have a subscription to watch anything and it was kind of expensive 😞. I guess I will just have to wait and hope Netflix picks up a bunch of these shows
This makes Mondays worth it, what a great start to the week!
Thanks for the clarification, you said that Ning Yi Mother was a nun? Please explain. The drama mentions bits and pieces about her life. Does the book any real background on her.
Sorry, if I remember right, I think what you got in the last two posts are about all the background the author gave for Ning Yi’s mother. I am not sure how historically correct this is, but it seems for a lot of Chinese noblewomen and royalties, being sent to a monastery to become a nun is another option for either forced exile or self chosen exile. In our hero’s mother’s case, it is obvious a forced one but judging by what our hero knows of his mother, she would’ve taken her vow very seriously.
Thanks so much for the translation. Finally, it seems that NY is being open to his affections to Zhi Wei. Looking forward to seeing how they will get out of this debacle next week!
Thank you. I’m loving these glimpses into the novel, which is just as exciting and addictive as the drama.
Thank you so much for all the translations of this novel. Great generous work! I’m a lucky reader. . . .
Thanks for the response, it’s very interesting if she was in a convent why did the emperor return her? She fell onto his horse, more questions, than the answer. Anyway, I hope that she died better in the novel than the drama.
Ahh…sorry I wasn’t clear. Yes, some families would send the women to a convent but the the really rich ones could just build a small temple somewhere on their estate. The Emperor didn’t send Ning Yi’s mother away but just put her somewhere close by where he can get to easily. Remember, to everyone else Ning Yi’s mother died so the whole making her a nun was just something the Emperor said to Ning Yi’s mother. (He was charmed by her beauty so probably gave her a whole bunch of flowery excuse of how he is protecting her by faking her death. The nun thing is of course just a nice way to say “Your presence is inconvenient so we getting rid of you.” but judging by what Ning Yi said of his mother, she still took her vow seriously.)
The statue Ning Yi is referring to in the book it and the scene in the drama. I can’t recall and I have played that episode and I don’t see any statue. In the drama, the location is in the center of the palace where Ning Yi Mother was hidden? It is unreal that the emperor hid her away that long? Sorry to run on with this, but the drama is so heartfelt, I can’t help but wonder?
I don’t believe the statue was in the drama at all which totally makes sense because the Emperor in the drama is a much better human being than the one described in the novel. (That will come into play later on because while in the drama there is still a bit of fatherly affection between the Emperor and his sons, that’s not the case in the novel.) As for the location, there is two. The one our two leads were in where they made a fire, is Ning Yi’s mother’s place in the palace while she was still a royal concubine. The place Ning Yi’s mother was hidden away was obviously still part of the palace grounds or at least close by (else young Ning Yi would never had chance upon it) but it was NOT the same dwelling she had as a royal concubine. That’s also why there was a secret passageway since it had to connect Ning Yi’s mother’s old dwelling to the place she was being kept.
😍😍😍😍 love your translations!!! Thank you for your great work!!!—
