The Legends (Chinese Drama, New)

Hmm…I am torn on this one. The Legend is based on a hilarious book but judging by the first episode I am not sure the show is actually going the comedy route. I thought the novel was refreshingly funny and would’ve been very interested in the show if the drama could’ve somehow retained the humorous tone but it seems the drama is going the more mellow route.

Here is a synopsis of the novel (the drama started off quite differently so I am assuming the story has been added and changed quite a bit): Died on the day she was about to become the demon king our heroine spends her days floating around as a ghost. Quite vexed by the fact that someone as great as herself not only ended up being buried in an unmarked grave but the only person who visited her grave is the very guy who betrayed then killed her, our heroine’s only wish is to exact her revenge on her nemesis. Unexpectedly given a chance to enter into someone else’s body, our heroine promptly jumps on it and plans to exact her revenge… Unbeknownst to our heroine, the nemesis she so bent on seeking revenge against is our hero- the man who was and still is completely in love with her. What follows is a hilarious story of how our heroine naively tries to exact her revenge upon her nemesis while her so-called nemesis couldn’t be more overjoyed to have her back in his life.

Despite the more serious tone of the first episode, I am holding out hope that since the show did bring in the novel’s author to consult on the writing of the script maybe the drama will still retain the wacky feel of the novel once the backstory is set up.

2/2

Setsuyaku Rock (Japanese Drama, New)

Live action of a manga by the same name. Setsuyaku Rock is a comedy that tells the journey of our hero trying to get back his girlfriend of three years by being frugal.

The show has J-drama’s trademark over the top comedy…I especially enjoyed the hilarious reason given for our hero’s desperation to get his girlfriend back. By the way, don’t miss the little frugal tips the show has at the end of each episode. (Who knew you could use receipt paper to rub your nails to make them shine?)

2/5

Silent Voice (Japanese Drama, New)

Based on a crime mystery novel, Silent Voice follows our heroine who is a female interrogator with the ability to see through any lies. I had assumed at first that our heroine would have some supernatural ability but it turns out our heroine is just really good at psychology and observation.

A Story to Read When You Fall In Love (Japanese Drama)
Synopsis: Her life in a rut ever since she failed the entrance exam of the prestigious Tokyo University, our 31 years old heroine, Junko Harumi works in a third rate private academy as a tutor with no possibility of romance in sight. Almost resigned that she is probably no good at being a tutor either, Harumi’s life suddenly has a purpose when an unlikely student asks for her help in challenging the seemingly impossible goal of entering into Tokyo University. All her passion for teaching fired up, our heroine devotes all her energy to helping her student…without realizing three very different men has shown up in her life and is very much interested in her.

I somehow missed covering this one in my previous Ninja Chatter posts even though I have been following it for the last bit. I usually stay far away from shows that have their heroines spend the whole show going through a bunch of male leads to figure out which one is Mr. Right but this one is surprisingly endearing, sweet and funny. In fact, I find myself enjoying all three male leads’ interaction with the heroine and love all the characters that I find myself rooting for all three male leads. (I have a favorite of course but that one is probably a dead end. However, this IS a J-drama so logic is not always important…)

Touch Your Heart (Korean Drama, New)
Synopsis: Her acting career in a freefall due to a scandal, our heroine is desperate to hold onto her chance of making a comeback…but to do that she must first spend three month with a prickly lawyer as his assistant in order to prepare for an upcoming role.

I guess the drama god heard the fans prayer after Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na’s memorable pairing in Goblin-The Lonely and Great God. Touched Your Heart is based on a webtoon which comes through in its wacky comedic vibe. The first two episode was pretty decent. It wasn’t an instant addiction as I had hoped but I certainly liked it enough to put it on my watch list for now.
