Episode 7
◦ Unable to just sit in Ning Yi’s manor while her family’s fate is unknown, Zhi Wei runs away but is soon brought back by Gu Yan. Staring at a sleeping Zhi Wei, Ning Yi wonders what she would think of him when she finds out the enmity between them.
◦ Waking up the next morning on Ning Yi’s bed, a confused Zhi Wei wonders out loud if her escape the day before was all a dream. Even more confused when Ning Yi tells her with all seriousness that she had a fever and had never left his manor, Zhi Wei almost believe her daring escape was all a dream…until a sniff of the offending perfume her cousin left on Ning Yi brought back the memory of the day before. (Looks like Zhi Wei’s cousin actually wants to marry the useless prince once she met him but of course our hero wants nothing to do with her now.)
◦ Ning Yi, Gu Yan and Xin Zi Yan come up with a plan to make the Crown Prince believe that he has to keep Mama Qiu alive in order to prove to the emperor that he had indeed killed all the remnants of Dacheng empire. Pretending that he is on the Crown Prince’s errand to convince his sister-in-law to do what the Crown Prince wants, Gu Yan secretly shows Mama Qiu a slip of paper that says “Safe” to let her know that Zhi Wei is okay.
Episode 8
◦ Ning Yi takes Zhi Wei to see her family. Disguised as a manservant, Zhi Wei listens with a broken heart as Mama Qiu blames the death of the concubine on her and then swears vehemently that she will not have a killer as a daughter anymore.
◦ During a discussion with Zhu Yin, Ning Yi finally figures out that the Crown Prince must’ve killed Zhu Yin’s father and the Third Prince because they had discovered his secret concerning Xue Futu.
◦ Zhi Wei ends up going back to the brothel with Zhu Yin. Finally getting a chance to meet Zhi Wei face to face, Xin Zi Yan jumps on the chance to tease our heroine by giving her a riddle to solve. Watching the confrontation with amusement, Ning Yi tells Zhu Yin that the answer to the riddle is water. Our smarty pants heroine easily solved the riddle but not before teaching Xin Zi Yan a lesson by feeding him a cup of tea that supposedly had a baby’s first urine added to it. (As Zhi Wei explained later to Zhu Yin and Ning Yi to Xin Zi Yan, the tea was just some old ash water since there are obviously no babies to be found in a brothel.)
Episode 9
◦ Zhi Wei inquires Zhu Yin about her true relationship with Ning Yi. Quite forthcoming with Zhi Wei, Zhu Yin tells our heroine about the dreadful witchcraft case that made her go from a pampered lady to a courtesan and landed Ning Yi in imprisonment. Uncomfortable when Zhu Yin wonders out loud why Zhi Wei seems so set on avoiding Ning Yi when he has done everything in his power to help her, Zhi Wei replies that she has her reasons but they are reasons she can reveal.
◦ While in a meeting with Xin Zi Yan, Ning Yi gets word that the Crown Prince is heading towards the brothel. In danger of having his alliance with Xin Zi Yan exposed, Ning Yi quickly orders his man to go inform Xin Zi Yan’s wife- Da Hua, her husband’s current whereabouts. Ning Yi’s plan worked extremely well and that’s how we get the hilarious scene of Zhi Wei helping a panicking Xin Zi Yan hide from his furious wife. As a payment for Zhi Wei’s help, Xin Zi Yan gives her a token that she can use later on to ask him to do something for her.
◦ I am going to skip over most of the political intrigue even though it is actually quite intriguing. Long story short, Ning Yi and Xin Zi Yan devise a plan to drive a wedge of doubt between the Crown Prince and 5th Prince who up to this point had been a faithful lackey. Ning Yi’s plan was actually quite simple. Knowing the Crown Prince’s skeptical nature, Ning Yi has Xin Zi Yan plants just a small seed of doubt in the Crown Prince’s mind concerning the 5th Prince’s faithfulness to him and the rest of it is history. As for the 5th Prince, the guy was truly loyal to the Crown Prince but once Xin Zi Yan used a talking bird and a masked guy to convince him that the heaven had chosen him as the crown prince instead, the 5th Prince started to have his own daring aspirations.
◦ Feeling indebted to Ning Yi for everything he had done for her, Zhi Wei decides that the best way to repay him is to take on a new identity as a manservant in the brothel house and find an opportunity to help him. (Our heroine gave her new identity the name of Wei Zhi)
◦ The Crown Prince gives Ning Yi a jade ring but Ning Yi promptly turns around and gave the ring to the emperor’s eunuch who was overjoyed to receive something so precious. (The jade ring was supposedly from a very important monk.)
