This one is going to be a bit difficult to explain the novel ending since the drama changed a few fundamental premises of the story, thus the drama diverged from the novel quite a bit from the very beginning. However, I feel the drama did keep the core of the story so the novel ending shouldn’t feel too strange.

Some major differences between Si Jin, the novel and the drama:

  • Our heroine did not have the saintess’ mark on the back of her neck.
  • The Namwha tribe had a saintess whose appearance was almost the spitting image of our heroine. The young saintess died while trying to master a particularly difficult spell (one that controls all the insects) that only the holy saintess would be able to learn. In fear that the news of saintess’ death would bring chaos and war, the Nawwha tribe leader chose to hide the fact.
  • In our heroine’s previous life, she fell off the cliff after her disastrous first marriage. The Namwha tribe leader rescued her and asked our heroine to pretend to be the deceased saintess. Much to Nawha tribe leader’s shock, our heroine learned everything she was taught and was even able to master the spell that had killed the previous saintess. It was while living in the Nawha tribe our heroine met our hero.
  • In the novel, the relationship between Nawha and the Zhou empire wasn’t quite as tense as the drama portrayed. They were no friends obviously, but it wasn’t kill each other on sight either. Yu Jin (our hero) had actually rescued the previous saintess from danger and escorted her back to her tribe. The tribe leader, being aware that one of the tribe’s prophecies is that the “7th son will bring the light back to the tribe”, allowed Yu Jin’s continual presence in the tribe. As the previous saintess was dying, she had asked to see Yu Jin. Harboring a hope that Yu Jin might somehow bring a miracle and save the saintess’ life, the tribe leader brought Yu Jin in, which is why our hero was one of the few people who were aware of the saintess’ death.
  • Hiding his real identity, Yu Jin pursued our heroine in earnest until she finally fell for him and agreed to marry him. Furious after finding out his identity, our heroine slapped Yu Jin until her hand was hurting and his head was swollen. Undaunted, Yu Jin told our heroine that since she had agreed to marry him then she couldn’t go back on her word. Sneering coldly, our heroine proclaimed that she would not marry him until he could bring the imperial decree to make her his wife. Much to our heroine’s shock, Yu Jin soon came back with a royal decree that said in gratitude for Namwha’s aid in helping Zhou empire in battle (against another country), the 7th Prince will wed the Namwha saintess.
  • In the novel, our hero wasn’t the one who killed our heroine. Caught in the fight for the throne, our heroine became an obstacle when our hero’s mother decided that in order to make our hero become a more obedient son- meaning one who would help his older brother (the 4th prince) to obtain the throne, she needs a new daughter-in-law, one who would persuade Yu Jin to do the “right thing”. While on an outing with her sister-in-law, our heroine’s carriage lost control and she was thrown out of the carriage and fell off the cliff. Our heroine managed to grab hold of the cliff edge, but 4th prince’s wife personally came and pried her fingers loose.
  • Since our hero wasn’t the one who killed her, this then was not our heroine’s hang-up after she came back to life. Her biggest problem with accepting our hero was 1. He is still the 7th prince, and she really did not want to get involved with that whole royal mess again. 2. She was told by the saintess’ maid that the previous saintess was the real one Yu Jin loved and that she was only ever a substitute for Yu Jin. Her worst fear was seemingly confirmed when she found a hidden painting of Yu Jin’s. The painting was of a young girl around 10-12 years of age who looked a lot like her younger self. Knowing that she had never met Yu Jin when she was young, and seeing the red dot on the young girl’s forehead (the only obvious difference between her and the previous saintess), our heroine had no choice but to believe the maid was telling her the truth.
  • Sick of being some other woman’s substitute (her first husband was pining for his dead lover the whole time they were married as well), our heroine vowed she would not make the same mistake again in her new life, no matter how much she still loved Yu Jin.
  • Unfortunately…or fortunately, our hero is still as relentless as ever and our heroine soon finds her heart softening again. It didn’t hurt that our heroine was once a happily married wife to our hero after all, so our hero was shocked/overjoyed/puzzled that despite rejecting him again and again, our heroine was quite willing to kiss him.
  • Thankfully, our heroine eventually finds Yu Jin’s secret painting once again. This time, the painting had no red dot. (The author didn’t fully explain why, but just suggested in passing that someone probably added it to sow discord between herself and Yu Jin). Sheepish when confronted by our heroine with the painting, Yu Jin finally confessed that he had indeed met Jiang Si when they were young. A bit embarrassed when Jiang Si told him that she was sure they had never met, Yu Jin reminded her that she had once rescued a little girl from two kidnappers who were planning to sell the little girl off to a brothel. Turns out, the young unruly Yu Jin had once escaped from home by disguising himself as a girl. As little Yu Jin grew up, his feelings for Jiang Si also grew. In fact, he even made the trip back when Jiang Si was married the first time. The only reason Yu Jin rescued the previous saintess was also because he had mistaken the saintess for Jiang Si at first glance, but he knew his mistake the moment he took a good look at the saintess. Their big misunderstanding resolved, our heroine finally accepted Yu Jin.
  • The one big difference between the novel and the drama was that, as the saintess, Jiang Si was actually quite formidable in the novel. With the ability to control insects, our heroine could cause people to hallucinate or become sick. One big reason Namwha tribe was so desperate to hide the previous saintess’ death was that the mere existence of the saintess was reason enough for the other tribes to fear them.
  • In the novel, our heroine was also actively picking off her enemies one by one…with the help of her very willing husband of course. In contrast, in the drama, it seems to me that our leads were always responding to a crisis instead.

Si Jin Novel Ending

  • Cui Ming Yue (Prince Rong Rong’s daughter) was supposed to marry the Eighth Prince (not our hero) but Zhu Zi Yu (heroine’s older sister’s cheating ex) showed up to accuse Eighth Prince of stealing his wife. (Our heroine was the one who approached Zhu Zi Yu, not her older sister as it was in the show.) Furious that she was made to marry Zhu Zi Yu instead, Cui Ming Yue kills Zhu Zi Yu on their wedding night. Equally angry, the Eighth Prince had sent his men to keep an eye on Cui Ming Yue. Apparently not too smart, Eighth Prince’s men decided to tie Cui Ming Yue up and bring her back to the prince’s manor when they caught her trying to run away after killing Zhu Zi Yu. Furious that he was made a laughingstock on his wedding day and that it would make things difficult for him if Cui Ming Yue was found in his manor, Eighth Prince resolutely chose to kill Cui Ming Yue right then.
  • Clueless that her daughter had died and was actually glad that she had disappeared so she didn’t have to face the consequences of killing Zhu Zi Yu, Princess Rong Rong was still bent on causing trouble for our two leads. Not one to wait for trouble to come to them, our two leads expose the fact that Princess Rong Rong was the one who had killed our heroine’s mother. Unlike in the drama, where Princess Rong Rong’s husband couldn’t bring himself to kill her, in the novel, he killed her with a sword after finding out the woman he loved died by Princess Rong Rong’s hands. He then killed himself.
  • The big bad in the novel wasn’t Cui Ming Yue or Prince Rong Rong since they were taken care of fairly easily. The big bad was the Grand Empress. Due to the fact that he was adopted by the Grand Empress, the emperor was very grateful and respectful of the empress. However, as the story progressed, it became obvious that the Grand Empress had been targeting the princesses to either harm them or even kill them. Unable and unwilling to comprehend that the Grand Empress would do such terrible things, the emperor refused to believe the evidence that was piling up in front of him.
  • While our two leads were slowly revealing the Grand Empress’ crimes, one prince after another took turns to have a go at becoming the crown prince. The original crown prince was deposed the first time for sleeping with an imperial concubine. Unable to give up on his favorite son, the emperor then reinstalled the crown prince the second time. However, fearing that he would get deposed again, the crown prince tried to kill the emperor, failed, and was killed. The Eighth Prince figured his time had arrived to try for the throne but thanks to some behind-the-scenes work by our hero, Cui Ming Yue’s body was found in Eighth Prince’s abandoned well, and that took care of Eighth Prince.
  • In the novel, our hero’s biological mother had no love for him at all. Feeling no emotional ties to his own mother as well, our hero set a few things in motion and ended up becoming the empress’ adopted son…which makes him the rightful choice as the next crown prince. Angry and fearful that her favorite son’s chance (4th Prince) for the throne might be threatened, our hero’s biological mother agrees to the Grand Empress’ offer that she would help the 4th prince to become the next emperor if our hero’s biological mother would kill Princess Fu Qing.
  • The plot to kill Princess Fu Qing failed, but it was sadly at the tragic loss of another princess’s life who had tried to save Princess Fu Qing. 4th Prince’s mother was found to be the one behind the assassination attempt but she died due to her own poor health before she could be punished. (This was one big reason she was willing to work for the Grand Empress since she wanted to do something for her son before she died.)
  • Our heroine finds out her real identity. Turns out, her mother actually belonged to Namwha tribe and that she (our heroine) was the previous saintess’ cousin. Her mother was on a mission from the Namwha tribe to help insert one undercover agent into the highest imperial nobility. The person they chose to replace? The then crown prince’s wife…who is now the Grand Empress.
  • So why on earth was the Grand Empress trying to harm the princesses? I am honestly not sure. The author kinda skipped around that topic. It had something to do with the Namwha tribe’s prophecies that tied the tribe’s wellbeing to the Zhou emperor’s children (only children from his wife, not the consorts).
  • The Grand Empress wasn’t anyone super important in Namwha tribe but after being the Grand Empress for so long, she is quite happy with the power she holds now. Ignoring Namwha tribe’s summons to leave, the Grand Empress is now determined to get rid of our two leads. Jiang Si summons the Namwha tribe leader to the Capital. Making the easy choice of choosing their saintess over a now rebellious spy, Namwha tribe leader sends one of their spy who had previously been captured by Zhou empire before the emperor to confess the Grand Empress’ real identity. (They weren’t about to implicate their own tribe, so they told the emperor they were another tribe disguising themselves as Namwha. The emperor didn’t exactly believe them on that point, so instead of attacking the other tribe as revenge, he sent his men to make sure that tribe was strong enough to keep Namwha tribe in check.)
  • With some of the evidence presented in the “confession”, the emperor was able to prove without a doubt that the Grand Empress was a spy all along. Still unable to bring himself to kill the mother he had respected most of his life, the emperor ordered the Grand Empress to be locked up in her palace for as long as she lived.
  • After dealing with the Grand Empress, the Emperor soon passed the throne to our hero. Gleeful when he found out the officials are pressing their new emperor to take on imperial consorts and concubines, the old emperor figured Yu Jin would soon learn the necessary lesson that an emperor can’t always do whatever he wants. Much to the old emperor and the officials’ shock, our hero did exactly that– whatever he wanted…at least when it comes to insisting that he would only have one wife. Speechless when their new emperor willfully left them all standing in the imperial court after declaring he is “in a bad mood” after hearing talks of him taking on imperial concubines, the officials was first angry, but that anger soon turned to nervousness when their new emperor stopped showing up to their daily imperial court due to his “bad mood”. Ever grateful when Yu Jin finally showed up to take care of imperial businesses, the officials didn’t dare to bring up the concubine issue again. The officials decided to wait until Yu Jin became tired of his empress…as men undoubtedly would after their wives had a child or two…but their hope never materialized as the third prince…then the fourth prince came along.

Si Jin Novel Epilogue

The wind on the cliff was whistling in her ears. Jiang Si held on to the edge of the cliff with all her might, swaying in the air.

Her tender palms were already bloody, and her body was sinking little by little, but she had no plans to let go.

She couldn’t bear to die.

She had finally gotten rid of her tragic past and was in love with Ah Jin. There were still wonderful days to look forward to for them.

If she died, then Ah Jin would be left alone.

With that thought swirling in her mind, Jiang Si’s exhausted body seemingly regained a little strength, and she slowly moved her body upward.

A shoe embroidered with silver thread appeared in front of her.

With difficulty, Jiang Si looked up.

Princess Qi (4th Prince’s wife) had a sneer on her face, completely different from her usual gentle and tender expression she wore.

“Seventh brother’s wife is really tenacious.”

Jiang Si bit her lips hard.

By this point, everything is apparent.

She and Princess Qi went to Baiyun Temple but the horse was suddenly frightened. And now, she is the one hanging on the cliff, near death, while Princess Qi is serenely standing in front of her.

This encounter with death, Princess Qi is the murderer!

“Why?” Jiang Si asked.

She was confused, furious, and resentful, but she did not beg for mercy. Since the opponent had made their move, it was worthless to beg for mercy, it would only bring humiliation upon oneself.

The Royal Consort Qi didn’t answer Jiang Si’s question but leaned down and expressionlessly shoved her bloody hands off.

The moment Jiang Si fell, she seemingly heard Royal Consort Qi’s soft chuckle.

Her body was falling very fast, but many memories flashed across Jiang Si’s mind. There were memories of her father, her older brother, and her older sister, but most of them were of Yu Jin. At that moment, none of the people or things that made her unhappy appeared in her mind.

She didn’t have time to think about them.

She didn’t want to die.

Jiang Si’s body hit the mess of rocks at the bottom of the cliff, shattering her bones. But she didn’t die immediately, but still had a trace of consciousness. Alert and in pain.

It hurts so much…

Ah Jin, where are you, it hurts so much…

The sound of a heavy object landing on the ground was heard.

A big dog struggled to get closer to Jiang Si.

“Woof—-” the big dog barked and licked his female master’s hand. The hand didn’t move.

The big dog moved closer with some difficulty to lick his female master’s face.

The big dog’s world was very simple: male master, female master, meaty bones. But why isn’t the female master moving? He had followed her scent all the way here, but why isn’t his female master moving now?

The big dog tried to grab hold of Jiang Si’s clothes with his mouth and drag her, but gradually he ran out of strength.

“Woof—” the big dog barked softly.

Upon receiving the news, Yu Jin raced over on a horse at full speed. He dismounted and almost fell by the cliffside.

“Master—” Long Dan reached out to help but was pushed away.

“Is it here?”

Long Dan didn’t dare to look at Yu Jin’s eyes and nodded with difficulty, “Yes…”

Without any hesitation, Yu Jin immediately went down to the bottom of the cliff. Long Dan hurried after to catch up to him.

The bottom of the cliff was quiet and desolate.

At once, Yu Jin saw the person lying not too far away and staggered over.

His princess didn’t move, the blood that had spread beneath her body had already solidified, staining the rocks red.

Yu Jin reached out and stroked Jiang Si’s cheek. The face he had kissed countless times was cold.

Yu Jin picked up Jiang Si without saying a word, his face turning frighteningly pale.

Long Dan, who had followed behind, was terrified and could not help calling out, “Master…”

Yu Jin ignored him and walked past Long Dan, holding Jiang Si.

Long Dan wanted to call out again but knew how big a blow the Royal Consort’s death must be to his master. He could only sigh and pick up the big dog that had been lying by Jiang Si.

The breath in the big dog was also gone.

Long Dang rubbed the corner of his eyes and cried. Everything was fine, but why did it suddenly become like this?

Back on the cliff, the rescue team arrived.

Yu Jin didn’t spare them a glance. Holding Jiang Si in his arms, he jumped on the horse and rode away. Long Dan, who was a step behind, was dumbfounded as he held Er Niu’s dead body (the dog’s name) and called out, “Master, where are you going?”

Racing back towards the Capital, Yu Jin only had one thought in his mind: Find the Great Namwha Elder to save his wife.

Fortunately, Great Elder Wu Miao was in the capital at the moment.

Clueless how long he raced, Yu Jin finally barged into a house with Jiang Si in his arms.

“Save her!” Yu Jin ran straight to the Great Elder and blurted out the first words out of his mouth since finding Jiang Si.

Seeing Jiang Si’s bloody and broken body, the Great Elder’s face paled and said in shock, “How did this happen?”

Yu Jin had no energy left to explain and could only say two words, “Save her!”

The Great Elder reached out and touched Jiang Si, and sighed: “The saintess is dead.”

“I know, but your tribe has the spell to bring the dead back to life. Use it to save her!” Yu Jin knelt down, “I beg you, save her.”

The Great Elder looked at the young man kneeling in front of her and said solemnly, “Your Highness know that our clan’s resurrection spell requires someone to be willing to exchange their life for another life?”

“I am willing.” He just wants his wife to be alive.

Something flickered in the Great Elder’s eyes, “When she wakes up, it might be a new beginning. Do you know what it means to have a new beginning?”

Yu Jin shook his head.

“Reincarnation! I will use my tribe’s power to allow her to reincarnate again. But by then…you will forget her.” The power goes against the natural order of heaven. She, as the caster, will also sacrifice her life. But she is willing. Only at this moment did she catch a glimpse of a slim chance in the wheel of fate. Her life for one slim chance of her tribe’s survival- that’s worth it. The key is whether the man in front of her would feel that it’s worth it. If there is even a hint of reluctance, the spell would not succeed.

When Yu Jin heard the Great Elder say that he would forget Jiang Si, he clenched his fists and said, “Great Elder, you waste too much time saying useless things. When can you do the spell?”

“Tonight at midnight.”

“Tonight at midnight?” Yu Jin glanced at the sky, and his demeanor changed. “There’s still time. Great Elder, please take care of my wife for me.” He gently put Jiang Si on the bed, walked out of the door with big strides, jumped on his horse, and headed straight for Prince Qi’s Manor. (That’s his 4th brother’s house.)

The wind rushed into his throat as if a raging fire was burning through his throat right into his gut. Paying no heed to the pain, he went faster and faster until he arrived at the gate.

“Your Prince and Princess Consort are here?”

Seeing the terrifying expression on Yu Jin’s face, the servant hurriedly said, “The Prince and Princess Consort have just gotten back from the palace.”

Yu Jin had been out of the city on business. Quite a bit of time had passed between the time Jiang Si fell off the cliff to the time he received the news. By his calculation, it was sufficient for the two to have gone to the palace to report the incident and be back.

“Let them know, I want to see them.” Yu Jin said calmly.

Prince Qi was informed and came with Consort Qi to meet Yu Jin in the flower hall (just a room where people see guests).

Looking apologetic, Prince Qi said, “7th brother, who could’ve expected something like this to happen? I was just about to go visit you.”

Consort Qi’s eyes were red and said with sadness, “It was all my fault, if I had not invited sister-in-law to go to the temple together, then this wouldn’t have happened…”

Yu Jin listened quietly to the two until they finished speaking and drew out his long sword.

“7th brother, what are you doing?”

Yu Jin went after him with the sword.

Prince Qi had lived a life of luxury, how could he be a match against Yu Jin who fought his way out of dead bodies? Prince Qi barely dodged twice before he was stabbed in the heart.

Consort Qi screamed and ran for the door, “Someone come quickly…” Before she could finish her cry for help, she was stabbed and fell to the ground.

Ignoring the swarm of people running towards him, Yu Jin said calmly, “Don’t treat me like a fool.”

“Prince Yan killed the prince and princess consort— “ The entire Qi Manor was in chaos.

Yu Jin walked out with sword in hand. If anyone blocked his way, then they were met with a slash of the sword.  With blood dripping from the tip of the sword, gradually, no one dared to approach.

He left the manor, threw the sword away, and raced off on his horse, soon leaving his pursuers behind. Once he was far enough away, he abandoned his horse and traveled on foot.

The news that Prince Yan had killed Prince Qi and his wife soon spread throughout the city. Concubine Xian (their mother) vomited blood from the shock of hearing the news and fell into a coma.

The Emperor was furious and ordered his guards to track down the whereabouts of Prince Yan and place the city in a lockdown.

Yu Jin didn’t care at all. What did it matter if the city was on high alert? Hiding himself to midnight was not a problem for him at all.

The time soon came.

“Great Elder, let’s begin.”

“Have you really thought it through?”

“No need to think.”

Great Elder nodded and lit a strange incense to activate the spell.

Yu Jin didn’t understand any of it and just kept his eyes glued to Jiang Si who was lying on the bed.

Great Elder suddenly handed over an ancient-looking dagger and said sternly, “Hurry up and stab the dagger into your heart to take two ounces of your heart’s blood.”

Yu Jin plunged the dagger into his heart without any hesitation. Blood soon spurted out, and some of it fell into the jade bowl the Great Elder was holding.

Yu Jin held onto the wall with one hand, his vision blurring as he watched the Great Elder put a drop of blood on Jiang Si’s forehead.

The blood actually penetrated into the skin.

Yu Jin’s lips curved upward, and he closed his eyes. He believes no matter how many times he is reincarnated, even if he loses all his memories, even if he is no longer the person he is now, he will still remember to fall in love with Ah Si.

Ah Si, see you in the next life.

 The End!!!

Boy, I cried when I was translating the part about the dog. Er Niu was such a vital part of the novel that it was really a shame (albeit understandable) that the drama couldn’t show off how wonderful he was in the novel. The author never came right out and said it, but it was strongly suggested that Er Niu actually reincarnated with our heroine. Time and time again, Jiang Si remarked that Er Niu was way smarter than she remembered, and even on their “first meeting” Er Niu treated her as his master. There was one hilarious scene in the novel after our two leads were married and had their first child. Our heroine was walking to the baby’s room with her brother and heard the sound of a rattle being shaken in a fairly chaotic manner. Jiang Si’s brother remarked that perhaps his sister should fire the nanny and get a new one who knows how to shake a rattle properly to entertain the baby. The two walked in and were stunned to see the baby giggling while Er Niu was shaking the rattle to entertain his little master.

Needless to say, not only did our two leads get their happy ending, but so did Er Niu.
