This regent of Xiliang, is indeed also a formidable character.
He had obviously received the news (regarding the envoy). Since it was too late and unseemingly to do anything by this point, he was nonetheless quick to react and drove the refugees over to them!
Refugees could not be beaten or scolded, leaving them in an embarrassing state as they were robbed. Then, the officials who had “just gotten the news” would come with troops to “rescue” the Tiansheng envoys. Then after that, the attention of the people of Xiliang would be focused on the embarrassing state of Tiansheng envoys, and naturally, no one would pay attention to the missing guards on the Xiliang’s side.
Good idea, shrewd calculation.
She sneered and waved her finger at an angle where no one would notice.
Several figures quietly darted into the surrounding woods.
*Bang!*
Suddenly, there was a muffled crashing sound, and a figure abruptly darted out of the carriage and a small figure flew into the air, still holding half a piece of pine nut cake tightly in hand.
The small figure landed on the ground, rolled quickly, and disappeared into the crowd. Seemingly uninjured.
The curtain of the carriage was flung back, revealing Gu Zhi Xiao’s angry face, with half a piece of pine nut cake in her hand as she yelled in a shrill voice, “Scum! Stealing my cake, go die!” (See translation footnote)
It would have been fine if she hadn’t cursed, but once she did, the refugees were first stunned, and then they remembered the child who was kicked out just now. They couldn’t find the child anywhere and all assumed that he must have been kicked to death. Immediately enraged, those who had been clinging to the side of carriage yelled and reached out to scratch Gu Zhi Xiao’s face.
In an instant, Gu Zhi Xiao let down the curtain, quickly retracted her face, and shouted, “Dad! Go!”
The curtain closed and lifted again, and a snow-white hand waved slightly and those who were hanging on the carriage were thrown out again.
Completely enraged now, the refugees gathered and collectively started to climb onto the carriage. Feng Zhi Wei frowned, and was about to order someone to pull the people off when suddenly there was a loud bang, causing the surrounding carriage to tremble and then the wall of the carriage on all sides collapsed in all directions!
The heavy carriage wall collapsed, falling on several people on the spot. The others were shocked and fled in all directions. On the empty carriage base, stood a calm young man with a white veil fluttering on his head, holding a three-year-old little girl.
Gu Zhi Xiao stood on top of the carriage base with a smug look on her face, not caring about the loud collapsing sound of the carriage, and said viciously, “Smash you to death!”
This shocked everyone. Causing a carriage to break apart by internal force is something they have never heard of let alone seen in real life. The refugees stood there stunned while Bai Deshan began to sweat profusely.
As soon as it became quiet, sounds of horse hooves could be heard coming from the far distance.
As expected, arriving just in time.
Feng Zhi Wei suddenly turned her head, grinned at Bai Deshan and others, and said, “Apologizes, Official Bai, Commander Qiu.”
Her seemingly nonsensical words caused the few officials and the dozens of guards to stand there looking confused, and then they immediately felt a numbness at the back of their heads. They opened their mouth in panic and wanted to shout, but found that they could no longer speak.
Feng Zhi Wei nodded with satisfaction at the guy running around and tapping on the acupoints of those who belonged to the Xiliang side, and said “Thanks, next time you fall into a swamp again, remember to notify me to go rescue you.”
Ning Cheng sniffled with grievance, his face full of anger but didn’t dare to say anything in protest.
Once the people of Xiliang were under control, Feng Zhi Wei immediately shouted, “All guards, get ready!” (In Chinese, the literal meaning of the words is “fix outfit”, here in the military it would mean getting yourself (clothing and equipment) ready.)
The guards immediately jumped into action and straightened their clothes which were twisted and crooked due to all the pulling.
“Destroy the carriage!”
This surprised not only Bai Deshan and Commander Qiu, but also the guards themselves. However, Feng Zhi Wei’s authority is unparalleled and complete. Her order was always obeyed without question by the guards, thus without saying another word, the guards pulled out their long swords and split apart all the carriages.
The sound of hoofbeats was getting closer and closer, the smoke and dust rolling in front of them, signaling that the Xiliang’s “rescue” team would soon arrive.
With a shout, the refugees were about to run away but suddenly a green shadow flashed repeatedly in front of them, darting like lightning through the crowd. In the next instant, a large number of people fell to the ground. Those who fell down were all young and strong men, and those who ran away were all elderly, women and children.
“Change clothes!”
The guards came forward happily and stripped off the outer clothes of the dozens of unlucky guards of Xiliang. Feng Zhi Wei said, “Don’t want the guard uniforms, just the inner robes will do.”
Everyone moved quickly and stripped off the inner robes of the guards. Feng Zhi Wei pointed at the refugees on the ground and said, “Put it on them!”
The robes were put on the refugees, covering up their naked appearance, and their hands were also stuffed with Xiliang guards’ swords.
Bai Deshan, Commander Qiu, and others watched this with their eyes wide open. Getting a rough idea of what Feng Zhi Wei was going to do, their eyes were staring as wide and big as cow eyes— this shameless Wei Zhi, he dares to frame their people right in front of this very nation’s court officials!
Once everything was arranged, the scene in front of them was a classic one— it was a scene of a team that had been robbed. The officials of Xiliang were the ones who were robbed, and the robbers were then heroically subdued by the envoys of Tiasheng again.
Everything was arranged. The sound of horse hooves by this point was very very close. Feng Zhi Wei sneered and gave a wave of her hand. Several gray-clothed men, escorting several men dressed as Xiliang yamen, walked out of the woods on both sides. In silence, they handed the men to Feng Zhi Wei’s guards and then left.
Dust filled the sky in front of them, and the flag of the Xiliang army was vaguely visible. Behind the troops, there was even a crowd of ordinary citizens who had followed just to see what the excitement was all about.
A rider raced forward at full speed, and shouted from afar, “Is that the Tiansheng envoy in front? What happened? Do you need us to help….”

Translation notes: So here we run into a common problem when it comes to translating. The actual word Zhi Xiao said is actually “go die!” but it seemed to come off rather severe in English. The problem with translating Chinese curse words is that there are actually very few super mean and crass swear words that you will find in Chinese dramas or novels. In fact, most swear words you find in novels or dramas can often be used between friends when joking around…so think dang or crap. In fact, most often these expressions can even be used as endearment under the right circumstances. For example, the “scum” here, the Chinese word 坏蛋, means bad person, but it wouldn’t be odd at all to hear an exhausted new parent say “this baby boy is a 坏蛋, because he has been keeping us up all night.” Anyhow, I made you read all that just to say that while Zhi Xiao’s words were pretty harsh, it is not as harsh as it would be in English. And this generally applies to any swear words you see on C-dramas and novels. If you ever watch a drama when it seems odd a character would swear or say something so harsh that it doesn’t fit his/her character, then that’s most likely the issue of trying to translate something that should’ve been humorous or even endearing but comes off harsh when you straight translate it.
We can’t fault a little one for being upset with another little one for stealing her pine nut cake. I was so tickled and surprised by how FZW turned the tables once again to come out on top. However it would have been nice if they could have fed all the hungry refugees. And was Ning Cheng the spy all this while? No wonder he could be so forward with Ning Yi and not risk his head being chopped off! Thank you for such an entertaining scene, Ninja!
