Those of you who are seasoned C-drama viewers probably all know that due to some government policies, it is often necessary for dramas to change their endings…which was mostly likely what happened with this one.

For those of you who are curious, here is a summary of the novel ending for Love Game in Eastern Fantasy.

  • Up against the big boss, our four leads are trapped with no way out. Our heroine is getting weaker and weaker due to a mysterious fever that she suspects is the system’s way of telling her that she will die soon.
  • Desperate to save our heroine, our hero feeds her his blood which helps her somewhat. Her heartbreaking at the sight of his wounds, our heroine stopped him but then ended up falling into a coma the next day.
  • Equally pained by the knowledge of what our heroine’s death will do to her brother, Mu Yao decides to sacrifice herself in hopes that it will give the other three a chance of survival.
  • Discovering his sister’s intention, our hero knew he had to act soon. Despite almost being driven crazy by the thought that our heroine’s bright smile might one day be for another man, our hero nonetheless left our unconscious heroine with a big stash of talismans he drew (for her protection).
  • After our hero left, our heroine finally woke up after the belated system finally came on. Thanks to her knowledge of the book, our heroine knew where to go and beat our hero there. Realizing what our heroine had done, our hero forced his way in to be with her.
  • Seeing what our two leads had done, Liu Fuyi tells Mu Yao they might as well follow their heart and give it all they’ve got…even if it means their death, but at least they will die with those who are important to them.
  • Fortunately, the combined effort of our four leads had a surprising result and they managed to get rid of the big bad boss, but our hero ended up paying the heavy price. As our hero lay dying, he touched our heroine’s face and said, “After I die, you need to mourn for me for three years. If you dare…fall in love with another…I…”
  • “Ding…Congratulations, you have successfully won over the affection of “Mu Sheng”. Affection level has reached 100%.”
  • “Ding…subject “Ling Miao Miao” has accomplished the mission.”
  • THE END!

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy Novel Epilogue

  • The final battle didn’t kill our hero but he was unable to talk, or reason. Other than being strongly attached to our heroine, he seemed just to be left with the hunting instincts of his demon side.
  • Our heroine is glad that our hero is at least alive and has learned to live a somewhat “normal” life with the piles of dead animals our hero brings back to her. However, it is also obvious that the life of living with a husband who cannot communicate with her in any form is also a very lonely one.
  • It’s not entirely correct that our hero couldn’t communicate at all. By this point in the story, he has learned to control himself and ignore anyone our heroine seemed friendly with. He has learned to hunt wild animals instead of killing the neighbors’ animals. In fact, sometimes our heroine is surprised by what he understands. For example, our heroine finds out from Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi’s letter that they are living on an ice mountain (in order to capture the ice silkworm that is needed to spin another hair tie for our hero) and have even had two kids together. A bit envious, our heroine wondered out loud if it was even possible for our hero to give her a baby since she is human and he is a demon. A bit sheepish when she noticed the seemingly unhappy expression in our hero’s eyes, our heroine quickly assures him “You can, you can. If it was you, you can give me a soccer team of kids!)
  • Miao Miao takes our hero home and is pleasantly surprised to find that her father is quite accepting of his son-in-law’s condition. On the night they got home, our heroine had a dream where she had a conversation with our hero. Our hero asked her if she wanted to go home. She answered yes, but then complained that he is like a dummy right now so she can’t possibly leave now. She asked him “When are you coming back?” He glanced sideways at her and asked, “Being so quiet and obedient right now, isn’t that good?” Feeling wronged, our heroine complained, “What are you talking about? Even if I had a pet bird, at least it would chirp, unlike you.” Seemingly a bit mad, he turned her face toward him, kissed her hard with a hint of punishment, and said, “Already tired of me?” Upon waking up in the morning, our heroine felt really bad about the dream. Taking our hero’s face in her hands, she planted a kiss on him and said, “Not tired of you. You are cute this way too. Really.”
  • While our hero’s dad is fine with his son-in-law, there is one particular person who is having a difficult time accepting our hero’s condition and that is our heroine’s aunt. As the one who had acted as the formal matchmaker for our two leads, our heroine’s aunt felt that she was somehow responsible for the “terrible” situation our heroine was in. Sitting our Miao Miao down, the aunt offers to find another man for our heroine, with the promise that even if she divorced our hero, their family will continue to take care of him for the rest of his life. Speechless that her aunt would even suggest such a thing especially while our hero was still in the room, our heroine quickly rejects her aunt’s offer and sends her well-meaning aunt on her way.
  • That night, at dinner, instead of being the one who had to coax our hero to eat, our heroine was surprised that our hero kept insisting that she eat more and more. Quite surprised and happy by the change in our hero, our heroine was completely stuffed with food by the time dinner ended.
  • Miao Miao soon found out when our hero was insistent that she eat more and more food. On this night, our hero came back to himself and one of the first things he asked her was “Is it the end of three years? You want to remarry so much?” Despite Miao Miao reminding him that she never did agree to his demand, our hero used the rest of the night to prove to her that her husband was still very much “capable” in the bedroom. Poor Miao Miao belatedly realizes why he had wanted her to eat so much food for dinner.
  • Much to our heroine’s dismay, once the sun is up Mu Sheng reverted back to his previous state. At first, Miao Miao thought maybe he was pretending, trying to trick her, but she soon discovered that he was truly afraid of the sunlight and seemed to only be able to come back occasionally at night.
  • New hope came with the return of Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi (with their toddler daughter and four-month-old son). After getting the latest updates regarding her brother from Miao Miao, Mu Yao explains to her that our hero’s current state is essentially his real self trying to stop his demon side from taking over. Sunlight is a big problem since Mu Sheng’s demon side can get more power from it.
  • Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi not only brought back the materials that were necessary to make the new hair tie for our hero, but they also brought back a special pair of scissors that they had to use to cut his hair.
  • After a semi-steamy dip in the hot spring bath, Mu Sheng came back to his senses just in time for him to willingly let Miao Miao cut his hair and tie it up, thus binding up his demon power again.
  • Time jumped to fifteen years later. Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi’s kids are all grown up. The last fifteen years flew by for Miao Miao. Eight months out of a year, our heroine would go catch demons with our other three leads. For the other four months, Miao Miao would drag Mu Sheng home to spend it with her dad. On the day she turned thirty, Miao Miao found her first white hair, she put her hair up into a married woman’s style despite her appearance still looking fairly young. Looking exactly like the day she had met him, Mu Sheng knew what Miao Miao was thinking– she would keep on aging but he would not.
  • At the end of that year, Miao Miao’s dad passed away and Mu Sheng knelt by her side through the night as she sent her dad off. That night, Miao Miao started thinking of her dad (in the novel, our heroine’s dad didn’t die in her world). Noticing the change in Miao Miao right away, the first thing Mu Sheng asked was “You want to leave.” Miao Miao protested but Mu Sheng told her there was no need to hide since he already knew. Sheepishly Miao Miao started to say how everyone seemed to be doing well now so there was no longer a need for her to stay. Surprisingly calm and understanding, Mu Sheng gently tells her “It’s alright.” Miao Miao was just feeling relieved when Mu Sheng abruptly shoved a large round bead into her hand and said offhandedly “When you go, just crush this for me.”
  • Miao Miao examined the round bead under the candlelight and curiously squeezed it. Horrified when Mu Sheng’s body suddenly jerked and a mouthful of blood came spewing out of him, Miao Miao forcefully shoved the bead back into Mu Sheng’s mouth with her shaking hands. Staring at the crying and trembling Miao Miao, Mu Sheng said, “You said you don’t have any regret, which meant you could bear to leave me behind.” Wiping her tears away, Miao Miao said “Who said I was leaving by myself? I was trying to ask if you would be willing to leave with me…” Staring at her blankly for a bit, Mu Sheng’s face started to light up “…could I?” Pinching his face resentfully, Miao Miao said, “Why can’t you? You are not even afraid of death, so are you afraid to even try?”
  • Before we go on, there are a few important differences between the novel and the drama to point out. In the novel, our hero’s world is both a book AND a parallel world. In Miao Miao’s world, there is a government department that is in charge of making sure the parallel worlds stay orderly, especially when it comes to demons. Due to a shortage of government funds, this particular department came up with the money-saving method of grabbing random young people and sending them on a “parallel world” traveling mission. Various things could trigger such a traveling mission, and as the drama portrayed, the thing that was the trigger for our heroine was her writing a negative book review. Another difference between the novel and the drama is that in the novel, Miao Miao is still a student and her parents are both still alive.
  • In the novel, Miao Miao asks the “supernatural government department” to change her reward for accomplishing her mission to the chance to bring one character from her mission world back to her own. Miao Miao gave a very convincing argument that she believes her departure would cause this particular character to turn completely into a “dark lotus” (evil) so the solution is to bring him back with her. After running a few probability scenarios, the “supernatural government department” was surprised to realize Miao Miao was indeed telling the truth. Based on 1. what Miao Miao said and 2. a certain high-level boss in the “supernatural government department” realizes that Mu Sheng would make a great “volunteer = unpaid” agent for their department, our heroine’s request was formally approved.
  • The novel ends with our two leads back in Miao Miao’s world. Our heroine is back to studying in school, being pampered by her loving parents but now she is also “dating” a super handsome “government employee”.
  • As for Mu Sheng, thanks to some very convincing words from his new boss, he is now working hard at his job at the “supernatural government department” so he can be a good son-in-law candidate to Miao Miao’s parents. In this world of Miao Miao’s, Mu Sheng realized for the first time in his life that his demon side is not feared but highly treasured by his new boss and co-workers. With this paradigm change, Mu Sheng is starting to really like this world, a world where he is officially accepted, needed, and wanted. Thoroughly amused by how nervous Mu Sheng is to gain her parents’ approval, Miao Miao assures him that her parents will love him…and sure enough, they do…because both of her parents can’t get over how handsome and innocent-looking our hero is.
  • One final note. The author didn’t really explain how this came to be but in Miao Miao’s world, Mu Sheng will finally be able to grow old with her– a thought that filled him with joy.
