Total Episodes: 40
Leads: Jiao Jun Yan (Medical Examiner Dr. Qin)

Synopsis:

Waking up miraculously after three years of being in a coma thanks to an accidental kiss from our hero, our heroine, Shi Gu Jing decides to repursue her dream of being a cop. Unable to remember anything three years ago that caused her to fall into a coma, Gu Jing is hunted by a nightmare where a mysterious man dies in her arms.

Meeting our hero once again in yet another accidental kiss on her first day at work as a newbie cop, our heroine starts to realize that new images/memories come to her both time she and our hero kissed. Thanks to her hyperthymesia condition, meaning our heroine has a superior autobiographical memory of everything she sees or happens to her, Gu Jing slowly realizes her new memory seems to indicate that she was a witness to a murder that happened years ago…a murder that is directly related to a puzzling murder of a famous model that our hero is currently investigating.

Quite embarrassed to lose his first kiss to a total stranger, our hero would rather not have anything to do with our heroine but when he keeps running into Gu Jing in his investigation of the model’s murder, our hero eventually realizes he and Gu Jing makes a great team.

Ninja’s First Impression:
I have been on a police drama slump lately so I really didn’t think Caught In The Heartbeat could keep my attention but much to my amazement, this one is a keeper! The story is fast paced, the acting solid all around, the crime cases intriguing, and more importantly, BOTH lead characters are great and have awesome chemistry together.

Police dramas usually have a couple pitfalls. 1. The “brilliant” lead character is not interesting enough. 2. The lead brilliant character is great but then the other lead character pales in comparison and seems boring. 3. The crime cases are boring. 4. Too little romance. (This complaint is just my personal preference…)

With a 40 episode count it is probably too early to declare Caught In The Heartbeat a success, but at least for the first 7 episode the show has avoided the four pitfalls…with TWO kisses between our two leads in the very first episode no less! At first glance, the show does seem to have very typical lead characters. A brilliant heroine who is a crime-solving machine, check. A young detective hero who is brash and slightly full of himself, check. What makes this particular show feel refreshing is that our heroine is not the cold aloof type but rather is a girl who is a bit out of touch with the world because of her coma. As for our hero, I was super relieved to see that he is actually a very skilled detective with a good instinct. What’s more, our hero has such a squeal worthy charm and soft expression whenever he looks at our heroine that I can’t help but swoon when he shares the screen with our heroine. This is a crime drama after all so there are still not quite enough romantic scenes for my taste but compares to most crime dramas out there, Caught In The Heartbeat is already way ahead of the game.

By the way, Caught In The Heartbeat is by no means a comedy but the show does have plenty of funny moments so that’s another big plus in my book.
