Korean Drama: Suspicious Partner (수상한파트너)
Broadcast Date: May 10, 2017
Airs: Wed & Thurs
Total Episodes: 40
Leads: Ji Chang Wook & Nam Ji Hyun

Synopsis:

Warned by a fortune teller that a certain woman is fated to mess up his life if he ever meets her, our hero, No Ji Wook asks “So who is this woman?” Smiling mysteriously, the fortune teller replies “When you meet her, you will know and say to yourself Ah! This is the woman!”

Trying hard to laugh off a feeling of foreboding when he realizes his new intern, Eun Bong Hee is the woman he had several unfortunate run-ins with, Ji Wook valiantly attempts to ignore our heroine especially after she lands herself in jail as her cheating ex-boyfriend’s murder suspect.

With the feeling of doom hanging over him, Ji Wook has no choice but to accept his superior’s assignment to be the prosecutor in charge of Bong Hee’s case even though his gut instinct tells him that our heroine is innocent. Knowing full well that the victim’s father…a powerful prosecutor will promptly fire him if he doesn’t ensure a severe conviction on Bong Hee, Ji Wook nonetheless, against his better judgment reveals a key evidence in court that proves our heroine’s innocence.

(By the way, the real killer had gone to Bong Hee’s house because he mistakenly believed she had seen him one night from her balcony. An interesting thing worth noting about the mysterious killer is that the man suffers from amnesia and will be pursuing our two leads throughout the show.)

Her little heart brimming with gratitude and blooming love towards Ji Wook for standing by her when the whole world had turned against her, the newly freed Bong Hee eagerly rushes to Ji Wook when she spots him walking out of the prosecutor office. Not excited at all to see Bong Hee’s smiling face bouncing towards him, our hero who just joined the ranks of the unemployed, declares to our clueless heroine “It appears that we are fated, no matter what…” Pleasantly surprised by Ji Wook’s words since she was about to confess her feelings for him anyway, Bong Hee nods eagerly “I also think you are my fate…” Unfortunately, before our heroine can finish her sentence, Ji Wook continues “An ill fate.”

Ninja’s First Impression:

Wow, I have a good feeling about this one! Kudos to the casting director that saw the brilliance of pairing Ji Chang Wook with Nam Ji Hyun. I am ashamed to admit that I really had some serious doubt about their pairing but based on the two leads’ great chemistry together I obviously worried for nothing.

I have always like Ji Chang Wook as an actor but as crazy as this might sound, most of his dramas (other than Healer) hasn’t captured my interest in the past. However, Ji Chang Wook is doing such a good job portraying the outwardly tough but secretly a softie sort of hero (at least when it comes to our heroine) that I dare to hope this one will keep my interest to the end.

As for our heroine, I am also finding Nam Ji Hyun’s hot tempered but not so secretly vulnerable character quite endearing as well. Our heroine might not be the smartest cookie in the jar, however, Nam Ji Hyun has done an outstanding job in injecting just enough charm into her character that as a viewer I can’t help but smile whenever she shows up on the screen.

My only fear at this point is that the 40 episode count seems quite long for this story. I went into Suspicious Partner fully expecting this to be your standard 16 episode long drama, especially given the fast pace of the plot so I was completely surprised once I saw that it was 40 episodes long! Oh, well. I guess that means the romance might progress a little bit slower but I generally don’t mind that as long as the writer could keep the plot moving.
